Russell, Donovan power Colby past Nor'easters, 71-58

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Forwards Mike Russell (Wellesley, Mass.) and Kyle Donovan (Portland, Maine) combined for 41 points to lead the Colby College men's basketball team to a 71-58 win over the University of New England in non-conference action Tuesday evening at the Campus Center.

Russell had game-high honors of 21 points and 15 rebounds, while Donovan utilized a 8-for-10 performance from the floor to toss in 20 points. Russell made 10 of 15 field goal attempts and added four assists.

Colby, which shot 56 percent (28 of 50) for the contest, received 11 points, eight assists and three steals from senior guard Christian Van Loenen (Falmouth, Mass.).

Senior guard Chas Rentrope (Peoria, Ariz.) led the way for UNE with 18 points, five boards and four steals. Junior guard Marcus Winn (Austin, Texas) nailed four 3-pointers on his way to 14 points. Classmate Ryan Knotek (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) added nine points and four assists.

Donovan was perfect on all six of his first-half field goal tries on his way to 14 points, enabling the Mules to build a 38-29 advantage. Colby scored the opening seven points and led 14-4 at the 13:40 mark. UNE responded with six unanswered points to close to within four (14-10) midway thru the frame, but Donovan reeled off a three and a pair of layups to push the visitors' cushion back to double digits.

The Mules led 41-34 early in the second half before going on an 8-0 spurt to assume a 49-34 lead with 14:54 remaining. Four different players found the hoop during the run, which was capped by a Donovan fastbreak layup.

Colby maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way in evening its record at 2-2.

The Mules dominated inside, scoring 44 points in the paint and nearly doubling-up (37-19) the Nor'easters on the glass.

Big Blue connected for 11 three-point field goals on the evening and forced Colby into 23 turnovers. The Nor'easters (1-6) also received 23 points from their bench.

Both teams return to action in regular-season tournament play this weekend. The Mules will host Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday (6 p.m.) in their own invitational. UNE heads to Bangor to face UMaine Fort Kent (5:30 p.m.) in the first round of the Paul Bunyan Tournament hosted by Husson University.
