North Carolina Wesleyan not only got Division III its first win which counted over a Division I team in more than five years, it did so in rather dominant fashion, defeating Division I UNC-Greensboro by a 52-37 score on the road on Monday night.

The Bishops outrebounded the Spartans 64-42 and won 21-16 on the offensive glass led by 16 rebounds from forward Javana Jones. They won the game going away with a 19-8 fourth quarter.

N.C. Wesleyan (2-0) was led by eight points apiece from Jones and senior forward Myrayna Watkins as they improved to 2-0 on the young season. Watkins also added five rebounds and two steals while Jones had eight offensive rebounds with a block and a steal.

Sophomore forward Kayrisma Harrison also had a huge game defensively recording a career high of seven blocks along with nine rebounds and six points. Senior guard Cydney Nichols had a well-balanced game also with five points, seven rebounds and a team-best six assists while fellow senior guard Keorra Taylor had six points, eight rebounds, and two assists. Senior Kayla Johnson also added six points with four rebounds and two assists.

The Bishops shot 75 percent from the free-throw line and 29 percent overall while holding UNCG to just 18 percent from the floor and only 11 percent from three. UNCG could only make 13 baskets all night against the stifling Wesleyan defense.

CeCe Crudup led UNC-Greensboro (0-4) with nine points.

UNC-Greensboro was a member of Division III in the 1980s. The schools have not met since 1988 and it was just the second win for N.C. Wesleyan in 21 meetings between the two.

A short history

This isn't necessarily a complete history, but even so, there aren't many Division III schools which have beaten Division I schools in a non-exhibition game in women's basketball.
