Eagles knock Jackets from unbeaten ranks

Mary Washington handed No. 4 Randolph-Macon its first loss of the season, while No. 25 Springfield edged No. 14 Babson in their NEWMAC opener, No. 9 Platteville rallied at Oshkosh and MacMurray and Greenville combined for 320 points in regulation in Division III men's basketball action on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

Mary Washington used a balanced team effort to upset previously undefeated No. 4 Randolph-Macon, 70-65, on Wednesday evening in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Trey Barber tied the game for the Eagles (9-5) with a 3-pointer with 5:25 left, knotting the game at 56-56. Ra'Shawn Cook and Barber hit back-to-back layups to extend the lead to four. RMC drew to within one on a 3-pointer by Corey Bays with 3:27 left, but a three-point play from Barber upped UMW's lead back to four with 3:09 to go. Barber led the Eagles with 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting, and tied for team honors with seven rebounds. Buzz Anthony finished with a triple-double for Randolph-Macon (12-1), with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

Jake Ross scored 12 of his 24 points in the final 5:44 of the game and No. 25 Springfield edged No. 14 Babson 84-81. Daryl Costa hit a crucial 3-pointer at the shot clock buzzer to put the Pride on top 66-65, marking the first of five lead changes in the final 6:57. The Pride (10-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) took a 75-74 lead when Ross hit a remarkable turnover around fadeway on the baseline with 3:44 to play, but Coolahan's jumper with 2:03 on the clock tied the game one last time at 78-all. Collin Lindsay got behind the Beavers' defense for a layup on the next possession to give Springfield the lead for good, and Ross and Post each made a pair from the line down the stretch to seal with win. Andrew Jaworski led all scorers with 32 points for Babson (10-2, 0-1).

Trailing by 10 points at the half, No. 9 UW-Platteville opened the second half on a 12-0 run and got past UW-Oshkosh, 74-70. Carter Voelker scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half and Drew Gunnink scored 16 of his 18 after halftime to fuel the surge, which lifted Platteville to 12-1, 2-0 in the WIAC. Oshkosh fell to 7-6, 1-1.

Logan Dorethy scored a game-high 56 points on 25-for-31 shooting and Trevor Voss added 36 as MacMurray outlasted Greenville 164-156. The Highlanders (3-8, 1-3 SLIAC) finished the game on a 14-3 run as Greenville missed six of its last seven shots, going 1-for-6 from 3-point range in that stretch. Greenville (4-8, 3-2) and Simpson combined for 321 points earier in the season, but that was an overtime game.

Arcadia went on a 14-1 run in the first half and never looked back, as the Knights cruised to an 84-67 win vs. Scranton. Arcadia took control of the contest at the 10:30 mark, as they grabbed a 24-12 lead. To end the first half, Arcadia went into the locker room for intermission on a spurt, extending their lead back to double-figures at 44-32 at the break. It was more of the same for Scranton in the second half, as a quick 8-0 run by Arcadia gave the Knights their biggest lead of the game at 20 points (52-32) a minute into the second half. Da'kquan Davis scored a game-high 43 points to lead Arcadia.

Derek Dotlich scored 21 points and Jake Rhode added 20 points to go with seven assists as No. 11 Elmhurst shook off a slow start and went on to win 80-71 at Augustana. The Bluejays improved to 12-1, 3-1 in the CCIW. Augustana turned the ball over 19 times in falling to 8-5, 2-2

DJ Hill exploded for a career high 31 points, including the game-winning jumper with six seconds remaining, as Eastern Mennonite earned an 80-79 ODAC win at Shenandoah. Hill shot 13-for-15 from the floor.
