Anthony Records Second Triple Double for #4 R-MC Men’s Hoops at UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Junior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) registered his second triple double in the past four games with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as the fourth-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, 70-65 at Mary Washington on Wednesday evening.

How it Happened:

  • Freshman Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) hit a baseline jumper to start the scoring before a 7-1 spurt by the Eagles made it 7-3 four minutes into the contest. A bucket in the lane by Mallory halted the run and made it a two-point contest. Anthony had a three-pointer and a pair of free throws that pulled the Yellow Jackets within one at 11-10 with 11:50 left in the first half. UMW led 13-10 before a layup by freshman Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) and treys by Talbert, Mallory and senior Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md./CM Wright) made up an 11-0 spurt as R-MC took a 21-13 advantage with nine minutes remaining. The Eagles would score seven straight points before a three-pointer by Bays and a one-hander by junior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) put the Yellow Jackets up 26-20 with 4:35 left. UMW had back-to-back three-pointers to cap a 10-4 run to tie the game at 30-30 with just under two minutes remaining. A three-pointer by sophomore Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) with 10 seconds left finished an 8-2 spurt for the visitors as R-MC led 38-32 at the break. Anthony had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists to pace the Yellow Jackets. Mallory and Bays both had nine points for R-MC. The Yellow Jackets had assists on all 12 of their field goals.
  • UMW had the first three points of the second half before a jumper and a three-pointer by senior Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) gave R-MC a 43-37 advantage with 16:15 remaining. Following a trey by the Eagles, Bays hit a three-pointer, Mallory finished a layup and Robertson had a follow as the Yellow Jackets took a 50-40 lead with 13:35 left.  UMW scored 11 straight to go up 51-50 with 9:11 remaining. A jumper by Anthony and a layup by Mallory put R-MC on top 56-53 with 7:15 left. The Eagles tallied seven straight to take a 60-56 advantage with 4:15 remaining. Bays hit a trey with 3:25 left pulled the Yellow Jackets within one at 62-61. R-MC trailed by four before Talbert and Anthony connected on both ends of one-and-ones to tie the score at 65-65 with 2:11 left. UMW would score the final five points of the contest and claim the 70-65 win.

By The Numbers:

  • The Yellow Jackets had three score in double figures. Anthony put up 16, Bays hit five treys for 16 and Mallory added 13.
  • R-MC had a 40-37 edge on the boards. Mallory had seven rebounds to go along with the 11 by Anthony.

For The Record

  • Anthony is the first player in Division III this season to record a pair of triple doubles. He had 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a 94-56 win over Lebanon Valley on Dec. 29.
