Recap: Oshkosh survives; Tommies end on a run

No. 3 UW-Oshkosh survived in overtime, while fifth-ranked St. Thomas ended the game on a 13-0 run in men's basketball, and the women's games went according to ranking in Wednesday's Division III basketball action. 

Robert Duax poured in 35 points, but couldn't finish it off as his 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime missed and No. 3 UW-Oshkosh defeated UW-Platteville 83-81. Duax scored 21 points on 8-for-10 shooting in the first half. Carter Voelker sent the game to overtime with a 3-pointer for Platteville (13-9, 6-5). Jack Flynn scored eight of his 18 points in overtime for UW-Oshkosh (21-1, 11-0), including a string of six consecutive points after Platteville took an 81-75 lead in the extra session.

Fifth-ranked St. Thomas trailed by six at St. Olaf with 4:22 to go when the Anders Nelson show began. The freshman point guard scored 10 of his 25 points in those final four-plus minutes as the Tommies finished on a 13-0 to beat the Oles 85-78. It clinched the 21st consecutive win for St. Thomas. The Tommies were 32-for-64 from the floor and a perfect 10-for-10 from the line. The other three points in the closing run were also scored by a freshman, as Riley Miller hit the 3-pointer which gave the Tommies the lead. Troy Diggins Jr. shot 11-for-18 from the field on his way to a career-high 27 points and nine rebounds

Illinois Wesleyan remained in a tie for fourth place in the CCIW as the Titans knocked off No. 13 North Central (Ill.) on the road on Wednesday night. Colin Bonnett scored all nine of his points in the second half, while Brady Rose scored 16 to lead Illinois Wesleyan (14-8, 7-6). Tommy Koth scored a game-high 24 points in 34 minutes before fouling out, snapping a seven-game winning streak for the Cardinals (18-4, 10-3).

Nick Felke, Cole Jenkins and Aaron Shank had career-high scoring nights and DePauw shot 63 percent from the floor as the Tigers knocked off their rival, No. 18 Wabash 94-79. The Tigers (15-7, 9-6 NCAC) put together a 16-2 run early in the game to grab a lead and never trailed the rest of the way. Nick Felke scored a team-*high 27 points for the Tigers, who overcame a game-high 40 from Jack Davidson.

Capital went just 2-for-11 from 3-point range but went 24-for-41 from inside the arc in an 86-80 win vs. Heidelberg. The win avenged an earlier loss for the No. 21 Crusaders (18-4, 13-2 OAC). Will Hannah broke out for 13 of his game-high 22 points in the second half. No. 11 Marietta got upset 78-66 to fall into a tie for second behind the Crusaders.

Jamezell Davis, Jr. hit a 3-point basket with time winding down to lift Albion to a 65-62 victory over Kalamazoo. The Britons (16-6 overall, 9-2 MIAA) seized sole possession of first place in the MIAA after Calvin took down Trine. Davis had also hit a layup with a minute left to tie the game.

Oberlin and Allegheny needed 55 minutes to determine a winner and in the end it was the visiting Yeomen who left town with a 95-94 triple-overtime victory. Joshua Friedkin hit an off-balance one-footed jumper from the far elbow with 2.3 seconds to go to put the Yeomen out in front by two, 95-93. However, after the play the Yeomen were whistled for a technical foul for players leaving the bench area. Thankfully, Billy Urso split the charity tosses – missing the first. The Gators still had life though as they drew up a beautifully designed in-bounds play that appeared to give Brian Roberts a chance at a potential game-winning 3-pointer but Christian Fioretti came flying in from behind to reject his shot and secure the win for Oberlin.

Women's wrap: Hope pulls away from Calvin

Thirteen nationally ranked teams played on Wednesday night and all of them won, with just one having a single-digit margin of victory. Calvin took a three-point lead with 6:15 to play in the fourth quarter at No. 10 Hope, but the Flying Dutch held the Knights scoreless the rest of the game and rallied past them, 58-46. Kenedy Schoonveld scored 13 points for Hope (19-3, 11-2).

No. 5 Trine secured at least a share of its third consecutive MIAA title with a 69-55 victory over St. Mary's (Ind.). All-America selection Brandi Dawson celebrated her Senior Night with 18 points and three rebounds for the Thunder (21-2, 14-0 MIAA).

No. 12 Scranton got back on track with 72-51 win at Moravian behind strong defense and good three-point shooting. The Lady Royals (20-2, 9-2 Landmark) held the Greyhounds to 29 percent shooting and made eight of their 13 three-point attempts. Freshman guard Emily Shurina came off the bench and scored a game-high 16 points for the Lady Royals.

No. 15 Wartburg and No. 24 Wheaton (Ill.) avenged earlier losses to unranked conference foes with lopsided wins. The Knights clobbered Luther 64-39 and held the Norse to their lowest scoring total in the series between these programs since 1984. The Thunder held Augustana to two points in the first quarter and led wire-to-wire in a 61-39 Wheaton victory.

There were only a handful of games involving two teams in the first set of NCAA regional rankings. No. 6 Tufts looked sharp in an 80-61 win over Babson in a matchup of the teams ranked fourth and fifth in the Northeast. No. 16 DeSales blasted Manhattanville and solidified its position as the best team in the Atlantic Region. John Carroll got 34 points from its reserves and defeated Baldwin Wallace 64-59 in a meeting of teams ranked in ninth and sixth respectively in the Great Lakes.

Kaia Porter scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting and No. 3-ranked St. Thomas used a 21-0 first-half run en route to a 90-49 home win over St. Olaf. The Tommies (21-1 overall, 15-0 MIAC) gave 14-year head coach Ruth Sinn a victory in her 400th game on the bench. Sinn's St. Thomas record moved to 320-80 (.800), including a 90-percent win clip since 2010.
