KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Jamezell Davis, Jr. hit a 3-point basket with time winding down to lift Albion College to a 65-62 victory over Kalamazoo College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action.
Albion (16-6 overall, 9-2 MIAA) seized sole possession of first place in the MIAA after Trine University was taken down by Calvin College in Grand Rapids. Albion travels to Angola, Ind., for a 3 p.m. Saturday showdown with Trine.
"Kalamazoo defended the (final) play well," Head Coach Jody May said. "They didn't give Jamezell a driving lane, but he pulled up and made a heck of a shot."
Albion went on a 2 ½ scoring drought as Kalamazoo pulled ahead 46-38.
The Hornets maintained the eight-point lead, 53-45, with nine minutes to play.
Kalamazoo went scoreless for three minutes. Meanwhile, ArShawn Parker buried a 3-point basket and Davis added a pair of baskets as Albion trailed by one, 53-52, with six minutes left.
Albion forged a tie at 55 on Davis' 3-point basket, and it led 60-55 on his old-fashioned three-point play with 2:40 left.
Another layup by Davis tied the score at 62 with a minute left.
"I thought our defense was really good for a lot of the game," May said. "We let Jeremiah Vincent loose a couple of times. We forced them into some turnovers. Our offense is good, but for the second game in a row, we haven't made many shots. The first 10 minutes of the second half we weren't making those shots and we had some possessions where we were looking at each other trying to figure out who was going to do something. That led to some bad possessions, but luckily Jamzell caught fire.
"We found a way to win," he added. "To grind out three wins in five days is hard. I'm ecstatic to come away with a win. We've got to get better if we want to win the next game, but I'm not worried about that right now."
