Guilford and Gordon pulled off upset wins, Scranton lost for the first time all season and the partial shutdown of the federal government claimed a game on Saturday, Jan. 5, in Division III men's basketball.

Gulford extended its winning streak to seven consecutive games and the Quakers made a statement in the ODAC race, knocking off No. 15 Randolph-Macon 64-63 on Marcus Curry's layup with 35 seconds left. Down by 12 early in the second half, Guilford rattled off 13 consecutive points to take the lead. R-MC did not score in the final 3:10. The Quakers (10-4, 4-1 ODAC) sit a half-game back of the Yellowjackets (13-2, 5-1 ODAC) and will not play R-MC again in the ODAC's unbalanced schedule.

Gordon made its case for national attention with a 76-72 victory at No. 16 Nichols. Eric Demers scored 32 points for Gordon and Garrisson Duvivier tallied 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Fighting Scots are 13-1, 5-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

No. 25 Scranton saw its undefeated record spoiled in heartbreaking fashion, 67-64, as the Royals missed a potential game-winning shot with seven seconds left and then watched Elizabethtown's Connor Moffatt race down the court to hit a game-winning three at the buzzer. Trailing 64-62 with 46 seconds remaining in regulation, junior Kyle DeVerna made a pair of free throws to knot the score up for Scranton (12-1, 1-1 Landmark). Following a miss by Elizabethtown (6-6, 1-1), a missed shot by the Royals in the closing seconds was rebounded by Moffatt, who raced up the floor to put up the game-winning shot just ahead of the final horn. Jackson Danzig recorded his first career double-double with season-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds for Scranton, while Bryce Greene had 17 for E-town.

The Merchant Marine men postponed their game against SUNY-Maritime because of the partial federal government shutdown. SUNY-Maritime does not have a women's basketball program, so the Merchant Marine women have until Tuesday's game against SUNY-Old Westbury until they face a similar situation.

Vinny Curta led Grinnell with a team-high 23 points and reached the 2,000-point plateau for his career, but it wasn't enough as Ripon edged the Pioneers (9-4, 5-2 MWC) 111-109. Trent Jones led all scorers with 31 points, including the layup that put the Redhawks (8-5, 4-2) ahead to stay with 16 seconds left. Jones was an assist short of a triple-double in the victory.

Ben Boots scored the last seven points of the game, lifting No. 6 UW-Oshkosh from a 75-70 deficit to a 77-75 win vs. UW-Stout. The Titans (12-1, 2-0 WIAC) took their first lead of the game at 18:13 in the second half, but trailed for more than 12 minutes before Boots hit a 3-pointer in the corner to go up 76-75 with 29.5 seconds remaining. Stout (6-7, 0-2) missed two foul shots, and Boots hit one of two to help seal the game. Boots finished with 31.

No. 10 UW-Whitewater missed two free throws with under 10 seconds left and UW-Eau Claire hit a pair with two seconds left to seal a 69-65 win. The loss was the Warhawks' second of the week, as they fell to 11-2, 0-2 in the WIAC. Cole Rabedeaux scored a game-high 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting, 4-for-6 from 3-point range. David Sachs led the Warhawks with 16 points, including 4-for-6 from the foul line.

Kyle Dixon hit a 3-pointer with 2:15 to go to put No. 8 Marietta ahead to stay as the Pioneers defeated Heidelberg 67-64. Marietta (12-1, 6-0 OAC) shot just 27 percent in the first half but rallied in the second half as Jason Ellis scored 11 of his 13 points and Lukas Isaly scored 10 of his 13 after halftime. Heidelberg fell to 4-9, 2-4 in the conference.

No. 17 Rochester scored the first seven points of the game and led wire-to-wire in an 87-78 victory over Emory in the conference opener for both teams. The Yellowjackets shot 52 percent from the field (29-for-56) and hit 10 3-pointers. Ryan Clamage had 22 points and seven rebounds for Rochester (11-1, 1-0 UAA) while Matt Davet scored 23 for the Eagles (9-3, 0-1 UAA).

Danyon Hempy and Reece Dupler shot a combined 24-for-49 and scored 58 points as No. 14 Wooster pounded DePauw 103-71, giving them just their third win in five contests since the last D3hoops.com Top 25 was released. The Scots (10-3, 5-1 NCAC) shot 59 percent as a team (43-for-73) and remain a half-game back of No. 21 Wabash. The Little Giants (12-1, 6-0 NCAC) had little trouble in beating Oberlin, 86-50. No. 11 Wittenberg nearly lost a game on both teams in the NCAC standings before James Johnson's 3-pointer in the final minute of regulation pulled the Tigers even with Hiram and Wittenberg prevailed in overtime, 84-75.

Junior Mark Madison scored 20 points and freshman Greg Rowson netted 19 to lead the way in Mary Washington's 69-61 victory over No. 18 Christopher Newport, 69-61. CNU (11-1, 1-1 CAC) got within five, 59-54, with 1:06 to play but the Eagles (9-4, 1-1) were clutch at the free throw line at the end of the game as they converted 10-12 over the last minute of the game to clinch the victory, 69-61.

Austin Hutcherson scored a game-high 36 points, 22 of them in the second half as Wesleyan defeated No. 24 Middlebury 80-77. The Panthers jumped out to a 10-point lead in the game's opening minutes, but the lead changed hands nine times, the final time on James Jordan's tip-in with 3:24 left. Jack Farrell led Middlebury (10-4, 1-1 NESCAC) with 23 points. Wesleyan improved to 9-4, 1-1. Bobby Casey scored 24 points and James Heskett added 20 as No. 2 Williams rolled over Connecticut College 95-69. The pair combined to go 9-for-11 from 3-point range.

St. Thomas won its 10th in a row as Connor Bair scored a career-high 26 and Anders Nelson had 10 points and seven assists in an 80-58 win vs. Hamline. The Tommies (10-1, 6-0 MIAC) have held five of their six conference opponents under 66 points. They remain in a tie atop the conference with No. 19 St. John's, which ascended to an identical mark with a 92-50 win at Macalester. Jubie Alade scored 16 points and David Stokman and Zach Hanson added 13 apiece as nobody played more than 26 minutes for the Johnnies.

Trevor Powell scored a career-high 26 points but it was not enough for the Wolves as Keuka lost in overtime at Alfred State 78-73. Powell knocked down four 3-pointers, playing in 43 of 45 minutes for Keuka (4-5). Ryder Mansfield recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 18 rebounds for the Wolves. Alfred State improved to 8-5. It was Keuka's first game in 30 days. 

Occidental improved to 13-0 and defeated Caltech for the second time this season, winning 61-49 in Pasadena. Zach Baines scored 15 points to lead all scorers, adding eight rebounds, while Austin DeWitz had 14 rebounds and added seven points in the win.
