A few hours before the calendar flipped to 2019, Amherst head coach G.P. Gromacki won his 500th career game as the Mammoths defeated Redlands 57-49 in California.

After a slow start in which the teams combined for six points in the first six minutes, the Mammoths (9-1) heated up on offense. Hannah Fox knocked down a jumper and sank two free throws and Cam Hendricks drilled a three-pointer in the final 76 seconds of the period, giving Amherst a 17-11 lead it would not relinquish.

Fox added 12 of her 19 points in the second quarter and Amherst took an 11-point lead into halftime. The Mammoths maintained a double-digit lead for most the game and outscored the Bulldogs (3-10) in the paint by 24 points.

Gromacki reached 500 wins in just 18-plus seasons. He has never won fewer than 20 games in a season and has won at least 30 seven times, all at Amherst. Gromacki went 143-30 at St. Lawrence where he led the Saints to the 2002 NCAA Tournament championship game. After one season at Hamilton, Gromacki took over at Amherst in 2007-08. He has a record of 337-25 in 11-plus seasons at Amherst, including national championships in 2011, 2017 and 2018.

The Mammoths play one more game in California at Redlands on Tuesday and then return to the east coast for their conference opener at Trinity (Conn.) on Friday.
