Jerry Scheve picked up his 500th career victory when Wilmington defeated Earlham in the Quaker Bowl Rivalry game on Wednesday night. Elsewhere No. 5 Chicago held off Wheaton (Ill.) for another win and Messiah did the same on the road at Widener.

Wilmington jumped out to a 21-10 lead over Earlham at the end of the first period and finished off a 71-57 victory to make Scheve the 19th active coach and 32nd all-time to win 500 games in Division III women's basketball. Four of Wilmington's starters scored double figures, led by Savannah Hooper's 15 points. Wilmington (4-1) doubled up Earlham 36-18 on points in the paint and outrebounded the Quakers by 14.
No. 5 Chicago built a 14-point lead, watched it disappear in the fourth quarter and then finished off Wheaton (Ill.), 72-69. Taylor Lake's layup midway through the fourth period staked the Maroons (5-0) to a 61-48 lead on the Thunder. Wheaton outscored Chicago 10-1 over the next couple minutes to make the game interesting and came all the way back to tie the game at 65 on Hannah Frazier's layup with 2:14 left. Lake answered with a three-point play to give the Maroons the lead back for good. Frazier scored again with 43 seconds left to pull Wheaton within one at 70-69 before Mia Farrell pushed the lead back to three for Chicago and Wheaton missed a potential game-tying three.
Lake finished with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists for Chicago. Jordan Myroth tallied 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, but also had 11 turnovers for the Thunder.
No. 14 Messiah opened MAC Commonwealth play with an overtime victory at Widener, 69-66. The teams traded leads in the fourth quarter and Messiah had two chances to win the game in the final minute, but could not convert. Maci Thornton and Kristen Smoluk combined for nine points in overtime to push the Falcons (6-1, 1-0) to the win.
Marymount held Salisbury to four points in the first quarter and the Saints defeated the Sea Gulls 56-46 in a meeting of former conference rivals. Marymount left the CAC and will begin play in the newly formed Atlantic East Conference this season.
Eastern Connecticut started Little East Conference play on the right foot as the Warriors dealt Rhode Island College its first loss of the season, 60-52. Mya Villard had a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) for Eastern Connecticut (3-2, 1-0) while the Anchorwomen (6-1, 0-1) made just three of 22 three-point field goal attempts. Elsewhere Mass-Darmouth stayed perfect with a 65-61 win over Southern Maine and Castleton made a successful debut in its new conference, beating Plymouth State 55-41.
After starting the season 3-0 and pushing No. 5 Chicago on its own court, MIT dropped its third straight when Babson dumped the Engineers, 76-71. Payton Ouimette notched 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Beavers (2-1, 1-0 NEWMAC).
Colby and Husson played the game of the night as the White Mules outlasted the Eagles 81-78 in triple overtime. Paige Russell saved the White Mules with a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the second overtime that tied the game at 71. Colby (3-1) used an 8-1 run in triple overtime to put the game out of reach. Keagan Dunbar filled the stat sheet with 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for Colby while Kenzie Worcester scored 29 points in 48 minutes for Husson (1-2).
