Tragedy strikes Geneseo, Lancaster Bible

Tragedy struck the college communities at SUNY Geneseo and Lancaster Bible where members of the women's basketball teams were killed in car accidents earlier this week.

On Wednesday, SUNY Geneseo annnounced the passing of freshman Savannah Williams, who was killed in a car accident in Geneseo, N.Y. on Tuesday afternoon.

A forward for the Blue Knights, Williams appeared in six of the Blue Knights' eight games this season. The Hamilton, N.Y., native graduated from Norwich (N.Y.) High School where she played basketball and soccer. Williams was a biochemistry major and is survived by her parents Mark and Shari and brothers Alexander and Zachary.

"Words cannot express how devastating Savannah Williams' death is to us all," said head coach Scott Herner in a written statement. "A wonderful young woman with a very promising future, Savannah's pride in being part of our program was contagious to everyone around her."

This is the second consecutive season that SUNY Geneseo has suffered a tragedy. Last January senior Kelsey Annese, along with a member of the Blue Knights hockey team, was found dead.

A day earlier Lancaster Bible College announced the passing of sophomore Alyssa Bowen who was killed in a car accident in western Maryland on Monday, Dec. 19. Bowen, who was second team all-conference in volleyball for the Chargers, appeared in 25 games for the Lancaster Bible women's basketball team last season.

"Anyone who knew Alyssa as a person and a player knew that she was full of potential," Lancaster Bible athletic director Pete Beers said. "While we don't understand it, we realize her potential for who she was to be has been fulfilled by God. We hurt for her family, friends and teammates, but are confident that she is in heaven and look forward to the day when we will meet again."

Bowen, who was a native of Westminster, Md., was a counseling major. She is survived by her parents, Craig and Jennifer, and siblings Craig Jr., Kyrstin and Julia.
