When the first Top 25 poll of the regular season is released on November 28, plenty of No. 1 votes will be up for grabs. Christopher Newport and Benedictine, which both received top votes in the preseason poll, picked up their first loss of the season on Saturday night.

No. 17 Marietta drilled No. 2 Christopher Newport 74-50 in the finale of the fifth annual Hoopsville Classic National Invitational. The Pioneers swarmed to the Captains' shooters on defense and got 33 points combined from Keith Richardson (18 points) and A.J. Edwards (15 points). Christopher Newport, which had six first place votes, slipped to 2-1.
No. 4 St. Norbert won a thriller over No. 6 Benedictine 71-70 to end the Eagles' 31-game regular season winning streak. Benedictine erased a 20-point deficit and led 70-68 with 22 seconds left before DJ DeValk converted a three-point play to put the Green Knights ahead for good. Benedictine had two top votes in the preseason poll.
No. 1 Amherst had no trouble with St. Lawrence in a 90-68 victory at home. The Purple and White used 16 players, four of which scored double figures. Conference mates No. 5 Tufts and No. 24 Middlebury defeated Southern Virginia and Eastern Connecticut respectively.
Technically no one wins the Hoopsville Classic, because it isn't a tournament. But Marietta sure feels like the top team leaving this weekend's events in Owings Mills. Read more here. |
Khory Moore errupted for 48 points and No. 16 Virginia Wesleyan pushed past Concordia (Texas) 101-94. Moore broke the school record set by Tom Brett in 1969. Steven Weidlich posted 31 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and Susquehanna topped King's 78-65.
No. 15 Emory survived Covenant 69-66 in double-overtime on a Jim Gordon layup with five seconds left. No. 22 Hope opened the second half on 9-0 run and that was the difference in its victory over UW-River Falls, 90-81. Harrison Blackledge notched 34 points on 15-for-18 shooting for the Flying Dutchmen. Nolan Ebel came off the bench to score 16 points to lead No. 18 Augustana past Calvin 79-60. The Vikings shot 61 percent from the field (34-for-56).
Finlandia rallied from a 17-point halftime deficit to surprise No. 14 Alma, 89-85. Brandon Robinson poured in 36 points and Marcus Geralds added 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Lions. Wartburg upended No. 21 UW-Oshkosh 83-72, despite 31 points from the Titans' Ben Boost. The Knights' reserves scored 23 points in the second half.
Outside the Top 25, Southern Maine outlasted Wheaton (Mass.) 131-125 in five overtimes, two short of the Division III record. James Starks III led the Huskies with 30 points and 18 rebounds in 62 minutes, as he was one of 12 players to score double digits. Timothy Berry had 27 points for the Lyons who attempted 104 shots. James Lathrop iced the game with a three in the fifth overtime after not getting into the contest until the fourth overtime. Box score
Greenville and Millikin scored even more points without the benefit of five extra periods, as the Panthers defeated Millikin 145-128. The teams combined for 163 field goal attempts, 76 fouls and 99 free throw attempts. Greenville had seven players score double figures, four of which came off its bench. Box score
New Rochelle, which has long had a women's program, made its men's basketball debut in a 76-72 loss to Penn State-Harrisburg. Hunter Schenkel led the Blue Angels with 18 points while Kahlil Williams notched 21 points for the Lions. Delaware Valley held off Alvernia 75-70 in overtime despite 33 points for Marquis Marshall.
Women: Royals run past Rochester on the road

No. 5 Scranton topped No. 7 Rochester 63-59 in an early battle of highly-ranked teams. Lady Royals forward Sarah Payonk scored 21 points, including the 1,000th of her career, and was named MVP of Rochester Chuck Resler Invitational. Scranton was a perfect 17-for-17 from the free throw line. Fellow All-American and teammate Alexix Roman tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds while Rochester All-American Alexandra Leslie scored 16 points for the Yellowjackets.
No. 21 Wheaton (Ill.) staked its claim as the top Thunder in Division III with a victory over Trine 81-68. Katie McDaniels continued her impressive play with 21 points for Wheaton. Fellow CCIW squad Carthage took down No. 12 UW-River Falls 74-60 as Madie Kaelber scored 16 of her 19 points in the second half for the Lady Reds. Brynn Liljander scored 17 points for the Falcons but Carthage converted 19 River Falls turnovers into 27 points.
No. 9 Washington U. sent No. 25 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps back to California with its second loss of the weekend. The Bears held All-American Kailee Sivert to two points and got 15 from Natalie Orr in a 66-49 win over the Athenas.
Sara Tarbert posted 21 points and 11 rebounds for Stevenson, and the Mustangs defeated No. 24 Stevens 56-51 in Hoboken. Amy Bullimore (13 points) outscored Jordan Holmes (6 points), and No. 23 Ohio Northern held off Denison 56-44.
Outside the Top 25, Anais Weatherly scored her 1,000th point and Guilford cruised past MacMurray, 75-51. University of New England took care of Regis 79-59 in a meeting of frequent NCAA tournament qualifiers. Centenary (La.) scored six points in the final minute to edge Hendrix 67-65 in a wild finish at the SAA-SCAC Classic. Jasmine Morris had 24 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Ladies while Madison Martin tallied 22 points and 20 rebounds for Hendrix.
