Finlandia stuns Alma, 89-85

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's basketball team was stunned on Saturday (Nov. 19) afternoon at Art Smith Arena, falling to visiting Finlandia University, 89-85. The Scots are now 1-2 overall while the Lions picked up their first victory of the season and are now 1-1.

Senior Trevor Gernaat (McBain, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian/Mid-Michigan CC) led Alma with a double-double, collecting 17 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Chase Fairchild (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) netted 16 points, including three three-pointers. Freshman Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Ada) also scored 16 points and made four of his six shots from beyond the arc.

Brandon Robinson led the Lions with a game-high 36 points, inducing 27 in the second half as the Lions came back from a 17-point halftime deficit. Robinson was 11-for-15 from the floor, including 5-for-7 from three-point range, and was also a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Marcus Geralds netted 21 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the double-double.

Up by 17 at the half the Scots maintained a double-digit lead until halfway through the stanza, when the Lions mounted the improbable comeback. Alma held a 76-64 lead with 10:57 remaining before Finlandia went on a 15-2 run, taking the lead with 5:48 to play. The teams traded leads several times before Gernaat tied the game at 84-84 with 1:51 remaining.

The Lions took a three-point lead on free throws before Fairchild was fouled on a three-point attempt with eight seconds left. Fairchild hit one of his three attempts, leaving the Scots down by two and forced to foul. Finlandia made its final two free throws to take a four-point lead with seven seconds left and held on for the victory.

Alma shot over 50 percent from the field for the second straight game, making 22 of its 36 shots, and connected on eight it its 19 three-pointers. Finlandia also shot better than 50 percent from the floor, making 29 of its 56 shots. The Lions were also 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from beyond the arc and out rebounded the Scots, 36-28.

Alma will take to the road for the first time this season, traveling to No. 13 North Central College on Wednesday, Nov. 23. Tip-off for the pre-Thanksgiving non-conference matchup is slated for 7:00 p.m. (Eastern).
