Penn State-Altoona went to LaGrange and plucked assistant coach David McGreal for its next head coach. McGreal, who also played at Maryville (Tenn.), replaces Doug West who resigned after one season.
McGreal becomes the sixth head coach in the history of the program since it joined NCAA Division III in 1998.
"It is not often that a coach inherits a team that has its leading scorer, leading rebounder, leading assist man, leader in steals, and leading bench scorer all returning, so I feel lucky to have such experience coming back," said McGreal in a release.
"I am also very lucky to come into a program where the administration is all in with its support of the athletic programs. That is evident with the investment in the construction going on at the Adler Athletic Complex right now. When it is finished, we will have one of the nicest complexes in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference to help aid in all athletics recruiting."
McGreal was an associate head coach at LaGrange for five seasons during which the Panthers won three conference titles (one Great South Athletic Conference, two USA South Athletic Conference) and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament last season. Prior to that McGreal coached two seasons as an assistant at Roane State Community College (Tenn.).
McGreal played four seasons at Maryville as a guard and reached two NCAA tourmanents during that period.
He replaces Doug West who resigned after going 7-15, 6-12 in the AMCC in his only season.
