After one season as the head men's basketball coach at Penn State-Altoona, former NBA player Doug West stepped down to take the head men's basketball coaching job at Altoona Area High School.

West graduated from Altoona Area High School and then attended Villanova University where he played for the Wildcats for four years and graduated with a degree in communications. He was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1989 and had a 12-year career in the NBA with the Timberwolves and Vancouver Grizzlies.

In a written statement Penn State-Altoona's Director of Athletics Brent Baird said, "We appreciate Doug's efforts as our men's basketball coach during the past year. He was a positive influence on our student-athletes, and our program has benefited from his leadership. We understand his connection to Altoona Area High School and his commitment to the youth in the local area, and we recognize that this is an opportunity for Doug to give back. We will miss him and wish him the best."

West was the second former NBA player to coach at Penn State-Altoona. Armon Gilliam went 18-59 in three seasons with the Nittany Lions from 2002 to 2005.

This was also the third Division III basketball coaching move involving a former NBA player this offseason. In April Dana Barros was named the head coach at Newbury and Joe Crispin was recently promoted to head coach at Rowan.

Penn State-Altoona finished 7-15, 6-12 in the AMCC last season.
