Eight men's teams in the Rochester, N.Y., area took the floor Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the area tournament currently known as the Wendy's Classic, with No. 17 University of Rochester rallying to win and Hobart outlasting Roberts Wesleyan in double overtime.
Rochester senior guard John DiBartolomeo scored 16 points in the second half as the Yellowjackets rallied for a 66-59 victory over Rochester Tech. Rochester improved to 6-0 and will play St. John Fisher next, as the Cardinals defeated Brockport State 85-72.
Hobart defeated Roberts Wesleyan, the one non-Division III school in the tournament, 81-80 in double-overtime and will face Nazareth, which topped Geneseo State 70-64.
Josh Pittman hit a 30-footer to end the game and lift Guilford past Eastern Mennonite 67-64 in the teams' ODAC opener. Pittman led all scorers with 26 points. Watch the video! Mary Hardin-Baylor won on a buzzer beater as well, defeating Trinity (Texas) 57-56 when James Allen hit a three at the horn.
No. 20 Adrian won its first game as a ranked team, defeating Mount Union 63-48 behind 17 points from sophomore Eric Lewis. The Bulldogs led wire-to-wire.
Randolph-Macon got back in the win column after a tough start to the season, rallying to defeat Lynchburg 78-73. Dylan Cole scored a career-high 20 on 6-for-10 shooting to lead three scorers in double figures.
Chris Hortman came off the bench to score 19 points and lead UW-Stout to a 64-45 win against Luther. Stout is unbeaten at 6-0 headed into its WIAC opener Saturday against defending national champion UW-Whitewater. North Carolina Wesleyan remained unbeaten as well, defeating Mary Washington 89-85 in overtime.
Jake Mays scored 17 points and had eight rebounds as No. 16 Wooster defeated Ohio Northern 67-56. ONU fell to 4-2. Centre center Blake Scinta knocked down a game-tying three-pointer with 13 seconds left to force overtime, and Centre outscored Transylvania 14-8 in the extra period to win 70-64 in overtime. It's Transy's second loss on the season. Ethan Spurlin scored 29 in a losing effort for the Pioneers.
Chris Kearney scored 20 on 8-for-12 shooting to lead No. 14 Catholic to a 73-56 win against Frostburg State. The first half featured nine lead changes before the Cardinals pulled away early in the second half.
Four players scored in double figures as UW-Eau Claire defeated St. Scholastica 84-70. The UMAC did come up big in another UMAC-WIAC matchup, however, as Northwestern (Minn.) rolled to a 5-0 start with a 97-68 win at UW-Superior. Wade Chitwood poured in 31 points for the Eagles.
