St. Mary's has found its post-Alex Franz and Sam Burum era to be a little rocky, starting with a squeaker of a win past Washington College on opening night and an upset loss to Johns Hopkins on Friday night.

Blue Jays freshman forward George Bugarinovic picked up his first career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to pace the hosts to a 67-66 win against the No. 15 Seahawks. Brian Grashof led St. Mary's with 13, while Devin Spencer added 12 and Nick Laguerre 11 in the loss.

Defending national champion St. Thomas lost four starters and its coach has stepped down since it walked off the Salem Civic Center floor with the Walnut and Bronze, but the Tommies got their title defense off on the right foot with an 82-61 win at Occidental.

Seventh-ranked Rochester scored the last six points of the game, taking the lead on a putback of a missed free throw and going on to beat Plattsburgh State 74-68.

No. 20 Centre twice rallied from double-digit deficits to force overtime against John Carroll at Mount St. Joseph's tipoff tournament. The Blue Streaks led in the extra session, until senior Jeff Mullaney tied it at 88 apiece with a pair of free throws. Mullaney then hit a jumper and Ellis knocked down two free throws for a 92-88 lead. Corey Shontz made a three with one second left, but it would not be enough as the Colonels held on for a 92-91 win.

No. 18 Oswego State picked up a belated first win of the season, holding on to win 74-71 when a last-second three-point attempt by Ithaca drew iron. Chad Burridge led the Lakers with 23 points.

Western New England improved to 2-0 in Mike Theulen's return to the sidelines as the Bears defeated Norwich 67-55. Theulen came back to the coaching ranks this season after spending time focusing on his role as Western New England's athletic director. Senior guard Andre Shaw tied his career high with 27 points. Brian Manning and Jesse Winter scored 18 points apiece as Cortland State defeated Delaware Valley 71-58. Cortland will face Widener in the Pride's tournament, while Delaware Valley faces non-Division III Penn State-Mount Alto.
