No. 7 BW Women's Basketball Defeats Ohio Wesleyan in Final Seconds to Advance to Elite Eight

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The No. 7 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated No. 18 Ohio Wesleyan University in the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen by a final score of 68-65 in the Shirk Center.

BW (29-1) advances to the Elite Eight for the fourth time in program history where they will play No. 11 nationally ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday, March 15 at 8:30 p.m. in the Shirk Center. Ohio Wesleyan (25-4) ends their season.

BW Leaders

  • Senior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) scored a team-high 15 points and was one rebound shy of another postseason double-double
  • Junior guard Kaycie Badylak (Cincinnati/Archbishop McNicholas) scored 11 points including shooting 3-of-7 from three
  • Senior All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) finished with 10 points and seven rebounds
  • Senior All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) was the fourth Jacket in double figures with 10 points and added three assists
  • Sophomore guard Maddie Ebbert (Lake Orion, Mich.) scored eight points, grabbed three rebounds, and tallied one steal

Ohio Wesleyan Leaders

  • Sophomore forward Macy Miller scored a game-high 20 points
  • Senior guard Kasey Schipfer finished with 16 points and six rebounds
  • Senior forward Karlee Ross led the team with seven rebounds and scored 13 points

1st Quarter (BW 21-15)

  • Vaillant, Ressler, and Ebbert each scored four points for BW
  • The Yellow Jackets won the rebound battle 15-6 with Vaillant grabbing four

2nd Quarter (BW 39-31)

  • A layup by junior Academic All-OAC guard/forward Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) put BW up by 10 giving the team its biggest lead of the night
  • The Brown and Gold forced three turnovers leading to four points in transition

3rd Quarter (BW 51-48)

  • OWU went on a 17-4 run to open the half and take the lead
  • Badylak drained back-to-back threes to regain the lead for the Jackets

4th Quarter (BW 68-65)

  • The Battling Bishops took a four-point lead with 1:35 left to play but a Vaillant layup and two Ebbert free-throws tied things up at 63
  • Schipfer put OWU on top with a jumper but Ressler hit the biggest shot of the season with a go-ahead three leaving only 18 seconds left in regulation
  • Ohio Wesleyan set up for one final possession but Ebbert drew a clutch charge and Irwin iced it with two final free-throws
