#13 Thunder Win OT Thriller to Open NCAA Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The #13 Trine University Women's Basketball team won an 81-74 overtime thriller over Transylvania tonight at Illinois Wesleyan's Shirk Center. Trine has now won at least one game in each of their eight NCAA Tournament appearances.
 
Sidney Wagner was dominant, posting a 27-point 15-rebound double-double, Erin Sherwood added 16 points and Allison Capouch nailed four triples. The game featured 11 ties and 11 lead changes.
 
Transylvania struck first, a quick answer from Erin Sherwood leveled things at two. Shooting woes from Trine allowed the Pioneers to pull away with a 7-0 run. Allison Capouch would have something to say about Transy's attempt to pull away. The sophomore led the Thunder with 55 triples on the season. She knocked in numbers 56 and 57 to cut the deficit to one. Her first make of the night was the 100th of her career. Trine took their first lead of the game with a Katie Tate lay-up. The jitters of the NCAA Tournament showed for both teams as they combined for 11 turnovers. Transylvania led 11-10 after one.
 
Both teams settled into the game in the second quarter. Trine shot 43.8% in frame two compared to 30.8% in the first and committed just one turnover. Transy settled in as well, scoring the first five points. Trine countered with the next seven to take a 17-16 lead. Sidney Wagner hit a three, Sherwood added two in the paint and Addison Hutson sunk a silky smooth floater. The Pioneers retook the lead with a pair of free throws. Wagner countered with her second triple. Trailing 26-25, Wagner found Capouch who nailed her third triple with 21 seconds left to take a two point advantage. Transylvania knocked in two free throws to tie it at 28 heading to the locker room. Trine allowed just two Transylvania offensive rebounds in the half and outscored the Pioneers 9-2 in second chance points.
 
Quarter three started with a Pioneer three, answered quickly by Sherwood with a shifty move in the low post for an easy two. Transy led 36-32, Wagner cut it to two with a mid-range pull up. Sierra Hinds took a charge and Sherwood added a second chance basket to tie things up at 36 with just over four minutes to play. The Pioneers broke the tie with a transition three. Wagner scored or assisted on the next six for Trine as they took a 44-41 lead. Transy would tie it at 44 but Hutson had the answer with a mid-range pull-up. Wagner completed her double-double with three third quarter rebounds, Trine held a 15-7 third quarter advantage on the glass while shooting 9-15 (60.0%).
 
Trine scored the first five of the fourth quarter for their largest lead of the night at seven. The back and forth battle continued with Transylvania scoring the next six. Jada Rhonehouse split a pair of free throws but the Pioneers banked in a buzzer beating three to retake the lead. Trailing 55-52 Trine called timeout with 5:26 remaining. Hinds trimmed the lead to two with just over three minutes left and Sherwood tied it again at 58. Wagner scored the next four as the teams traded baskets. Transylvania called timeout with 44.2 seconds remaining tied at 62. The tie held and the game headed to overtime.
 
Trine started overtime strong, Sherwood made a free throw and the Thunder scored the next eight in the paint before Capouch buried her fourth triple of the night. Tate scored four and assisted Wagner, Sherwood added the other. Transylvania answered with a three but unlike regulation play, Trine never allowed the Pioneers to tie the game. Trine made seven of eight free throws to close out the win.
 
Trine will play regional host Illinois Wesleyan at 8:30 P.M. E.T. / 7:30 P.M. C.T. tomorrow evening.
