BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The #13 Trine University Women's Basketball team bowed out of the NCAA Tournament tonight with an 82-50 loss to #4 Illinois Wesleyan. Trine finishes their season 25-4 (16-0 MIAA). The wins are tied for the third most in program history. Trine tied single season bests for regular season wins (23) and home wins (14) while completing their first unbeaten MIAA regular season since 2018-19 and capturing the MIAA Regular Season Championship.
Erin Sherwood led with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Sidney Wagner added 10 and concludes her career fourth all-time in scoring with 1,504 points. She added 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals.
Both teams started the game shooting well. Trine shot 50.0% in the first frame and the Titans were 46.7%. Trine scored first but fell behind 7-2 after troubles with the IWU full-court press. They scored the next six to take the lead. IWU again responded with a run to lead 16-8 behind some three-point sharpshooting. It was all Thunder from there, closing the quarter with a 13-2 run. Hailey Cole and Jada Rhonehouse scored inside and Wagner and Allison Capouch added three pointers, Sherwood scored three the old fashioned way to lead 21-18 at the end of one.
Both teams settled into their defense to start quarter two, Trine with their preferred tight man to man presence and the Titans ran an aggressive ball pressure attack. At the under five minute media Trine trailed 27-23. The Titans opened up a 35-23 lead out of the media timeout. Wagner cut it to 35-28 with her second three of the half. IWU scored on the next possession to lead 37-28. That would be the halftime margin as neither team scored in the final 1:24 of half one.
IWU pulled away in quarter three with a 27-14 advantage. Turnovers proved costly for Trine as the Titans capitalized with 10 points off 7 Thunder giveaways. A nearly five minute scoring drought doomed Trine as IWU stretched the lead from 15 to 24. Katie Tate broke the dry spell with two free throws.
The Titans controlled the fourth quarter, outscoring Trine 18-8. Kearston Stout scored the final basket for Trine. The Trine senior class leaves as the second most winningest class in program history with 98 wins, three MIAA Championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances, a Sweet 16 and Final Four appearance.
