MARYVILLE – The 2024-25 campaign for Maryville women's basketball came to a close Tuesday night as Coach Travillian's squad fell to LaGrange 71-69.
A first half controlled by the Scots showed promise as they outscored the Panthers by five and eight in the first and second quarters to take a 13 point halftime lead.
Senior Emma Huskey dominated the first quarter, putting up 10 points on 5-6 shooting and four rebounds. She would end up with 13 points for the game and nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double. Emily Allen was on fire from deep in the quarter, going 2-2 from beyond the arc for six points. Allen would go on to score seven in the second quarter and 15 in the game. Junior Ella Haney had 12 points in the game with seven of them coming in the second quarter.
For the Scots, it was hard to ask for a better first half. The team shot 56.3% from the floor and had 20 rebounds while holding LaGrange 50 11-33 on field goals and 1-11 from three. Allen, Haney, and Huskey combined for 32 of the team's 42 points in the half along with nine of the 20 boards.
LaGrange stumped Maryville in the third, holding MC to eight points on 4-15 shooting (26.7%) while the Panthers shot 44.4% and scored 22 points to take a one-point lead heading into the final period.
"We had the clunker of a quarter that I talked about several times this year," Head Coach Darrin Travillian said, "We got to the third quarter, and I think three of the first four possessions we turned it over and they just kept cramming it down our throat in front of the rim and we just didn't get the stops we needed".
In that quarter, Maryville committed eight turnovers which led to the run by the Panthers, outscoring Maryville by 14. For the game, the Scots had 17 turnovers that resulted in 14 points and contributed to 34 fast break points, compared to only six fast break points for MC. LaGrange committed only seven turnovers in the entire game.
A tightly contested fourth quarter saw eight lead changes and two ties. Maryville's last lead came with 2:37 remaining when Ella Tharpe made a fast break layup to give the Scots a 65-64 lead. LaGrange would then go down the court and drain a three-point jumper to retake the lead 67-65 and wouldn't surrender it again.
MC would cut the lead to just one point with nine seconds remaining on another layup by Tharpe. After the make, senior Emma Huskey would foul the Panthers to send them to the line to shoot two. Kendra Roberts for LaGrange would make one of her two shots to put them up by two with six seconds remaining. A prayer by Emily Allen from beyond the arc with just .5 seconds left on the clock would sail past the rim, ending the game and the season for the Scots.
"I think it was a tail of two calendar years," Travillian noted, "We spent a lot of time in the fall trying to figure out how we were going to play and who was going to play where and trying to establish an identity, and we were doing that with a heck of a good schedule, and you know the other teams are not very forgiving in those situations"
"I think about when the calendar flipped to the new year, and we started figuring out how we were going to play, we made some real strides and saw a lot of young kids contribute and step up. We saw some kids take lead who were sophomores and juniors and made some more plays for us, so we've got a good base and a good core to build on."
Junior Guard Ella Haney was the leading scorer for Maryville on the season, scoring 322 points to bring her total as a Scot to 741. She also has 324 rebounds in her career to go along with 113 assists and 75 steals.
Another bright spot for Maryville was Sophomore Kadence Stoner. Stoner started all 26 games for the Scots and totaled 155 points and led the team with 139 rebounds. She now has 228 total points for her career along with 223 rebounds, 56 assists, 38 steals, and 26 blocks.
The lone senior for The Scots, Emma Huskey, ended her career with 607 points and 528 rebounds, along with 119 steals and 114 assists. She shot an astounding 62.3 percent from the floor this season and 55.9% for her career. As a side note, the NCAA minimum for ranking top FG% shooters is five makes per game, which Huskey did not meet. If she were to have reached that threshold, she would rank fourth in all of division three in that category and 15th in the entire NCAA.
Coach Travillian Continued,
"We just want to keep up that positive momentum going from there. If we could come of the gates in the fall with the same way we finished 2025 then we've got the pieces we need to get it going and be competitive"
"It's hard to lose at home after playing your way into hosting a game, and that's a killer, but those are the breaks that came our way"
Maryville finishes 2024-25 campaign 11-15 overall and 10-6 in conference play after starting the season 0-9. Once the calendar year turned to 2025, the Scots won nine out of their first 13 games of the year and 11 out of their last 18.
