WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College basketball finished the regular season with an 86-50 NEWMAC loss to No. 9/10 Smith College at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse on Saturday.
Graduate student Ally Landau (Livingston, N.J.) was efficient for the Pioneers (23-2 Overall, 11-0 NEWMAC), going 9-of-14 from the floor with six made three-pointers for a total of 24 points. Senior Jane Loo (Saratoga, Calif.) and sophomore Hannah Martin (North Andover, Mass.) both finished in double figures while senior Jazmyn Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.) pulled down nine rebounds with six assists.
The Blue (8-16 Overall, 3-8 NEWMAC) were led by 13 points and nine boards from first year Ava Shane (Plano, Texas). Sophomore Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) tacked on 12 points and four assists while senior Caitlin Windross (Eastvale, Calif.) collected 12 points with eight boards.
The Blue kept it close for the opening portion of the first quarter, up 6-5 at the 7:38 mark. A 14-0 run by Smith followed, featuring 11 points and a trio of deep balls from Landau. After 10 minutes of play, the Pioneers held a 23-10 advantage.
Wellesley utilized an early 7-2 stretch in the second quarter to get the game to 27-22 after a Windross three. Landau and Loo both sank shots from behind the arc to get the margin back to double digits. Smith's lead swelled to 17 at 39-22 by halftime.
The visitors went up 20 a minute into the third quarter and stepped on the gas, outscoring the Blue 26-16 in the third stanza to take a 65-38 lead. The Pioneers emptied the bench in the fourth quarter with the game out of reach. Wellesley recorded the final points of the game on a three-pointer from first year Proud Techarungchaikul (Bangkok, Thailand).
Smith shot 34-for-66 (51.5%) in the contest and connected on 11-of-29 (37.9%) threes. The Pioneers won the rebound battle 46-29 and had 13 student-athletes recorded at least one point.
Smith has captured the top seed in the NEWMAC and will await its opening round opponent for the NEWMAC Championship.
