ROCHESTER, NY – Junior Kiara Anglin notched a career-highs points (23) and steals (7) and added 10 rebounds as Nazareth throttled East Avenue Rival St. John Fisher on Tuesday night 74-53 in the second go around of the Battle of the Beaks. The 21-point win marks the second highest margin of victory for Nazareth over St. John Fisher in the 101-game series.
Nazareth was already locked into the No. 4 seed for the upcoming Empire 8 Championships regardless of a win or loss on Tuesday night to the Cardinals. The Golden Flyers will host No. 5 Sage in the Empire 8 Quarterfinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Kidera Gymnasium. Naz defeated Sage 62-52 on the road and 75-56 at home on February 14.
In the previous matchup at St. John Fisher on January 28, Fisher was victorious 83-72.
The Golden Flyers led 18-17 after the first quarter despite St. John Fisher shooting 4-for-7 from downtown.
Leah Fusilli nailed a traditional 3-point play at the 6:51 mark to push Nazareth's lead to 23-19. That was a part of an 18-0 run over a 7:35 span in the quarter to help the Flyers gain control of the contest. In all, Nazareth closed the half on a 24-4 run, spearheaded by Madalyn Kelly's 11 points. She finished as with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Part of the run was also spurred by points off turnovers, which the Flyers had 15 in the first half. Nazareth also dominated the paint with 24 points, as opposed to just six for Fisher.
Anglin had five of her seven steals in the half.
Nazareth outscored Fisher in each of the first three quarters before the Cardinals had the upper hand in the fourth quarter, 16-10.
Sarina McDowell finished the game with 16 points and four rebounds. Katie MacLachlan and Molly Benetti each ended with nine points.
