MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Women's Basketball made the most of their Senior Day with a huge win over Millsaps to close out the regular season by a final score of 74-65.
Seniors, Brooke Jones, Kenadie Lee, Sylvia Kahoro, Jayda Wood, and Karlee Armstrong, were all commemorated for the hard work and dedication that they have given Berry College in their time as Vikings.
Pacing the Vikings on the scoreboard was Elly Callihan, who exploded for a season-high 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. Joining Callihan as double-digit scorers were Briaiah Lewis and Kenadie Lee, who had 13 points and 10 points respectively.
The contest began with Lee catching fire by scoring the first five points of the game and leading the Vikings to an early 5-0 lead. The Majors would come right back with a 5-0 run of their own to even the score with 2:06 left in the first quarter. Near the final minute of the quarter, Lee would find her fellow senior, Sylvia Kahoro, who drained a three-pointer to give Berry an 8-6 lead. Millsaps then responded with another 5-0 run to take an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
After falling behind 16-8 early in the second period, the Vikings did not waiver. Briaiah Lewis would finish a nice layup off another assist from Lee. A few plays later, Callihan swung a pass over to an open Kahoro who splashed home a three-point shot to bring Berry within 5 points with 6:58 left in the quarter.
With just two minutes left before halftime, the Vikings made their move at taking a lead. Lee gained her third assist of the game when she found freshman Emma Hempker open on the baseline for a smooth face-up jump shot that gave Berry a 24-23 lead. Millsaps would respond with a basket and take a 25-24 lead at the half.
The two teams continued to go back and forth in the opening minutes of the second half. That was until the Vikings unleashed a 10-0 run to take a 40-31 lead with 3:54 left in the third quarter. The run was fueled by a combination of baskets by Lewis, Jayda Wood, and Jeryn Jarrett.
Following that run, Kahoro found herself open off of a Callihan swing pass that opened her up for another three-pointer, giving the Vikings what seemed to be a comfortable double-digit lead heading into the final minutes of the third quarter. Millsaps would respond with a couple of baskets that cut into the Berry lead, making it a 49-41 advantage for the Vikings heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was a roller coaster ride of runs between both teams. Millsaps started out hot with six straight points, as they utilized full court defensive pressure to generate baskets. Just moments later, the Vikings responded with a 6-0 run which put them ahead 55-47 with just over 8 minutes to play. Later in the quarter, Lewis made a textbook pass to Callihan, who buried a three-ball to give the Vikings an insurmountable nine-point cushion with three minutes to play. The Majors did not give in, cutting the lead to five with just 27 seconds left, but the Vikings controlled the ball in the final seconds and finished with a Lewis layup to end the game victorious by a final score of 74-65.
Berry will be in action for the first round of the SAA Tournament at home on February 23.
