WAUKESHA, Wis. - It's rare to see one record broken during a game, but when someone establishes a new career record in two different statistical categories, fans know they are witnessing something special. That's exactly what happened for the Carroll University Women's Basketball team Saturday afternoon, as Olivia Rangel celebrated her Senior Day by eclipsing the program's career records for both assists (377) and steals (260), helping the Pios earn a dominating 103-63 victory against Augustana (IL). That marks the second time in this calendar year that Carroll has scored in triple digits.
Carroll (16-7, 11-3 CCIW) never trailed in the game, as they looked to score early and often, en route to a 31-12 lead after one quarter. The Pioneers built that lead thanks to shooting 47 percent (9-19) from the field and a scorching 64 percent (7-11) from 3-point range. They continued to use that momentum in the second quarter, scoring the first five points of the period, which saw the Pios lead by as many as 32 points, as the team was halfway to scoring 100 points just 17 minutes into the contest. Augustana (10-14, 6-9 CCIW) would score the final eight points of the half to cut Carroll's halftime lead to 24 points.
Carroll would outscore Augustana in both the third and fourth quarters as well, with the Vikings only closing the gap to as close as 22 points the rest of the way. All 10 players who played at least four minutes scored at least two points for the Pios, whom finished the game shooting 52 percent (36-69), including 38 percent (13-34) from 3-point range, as the team was just three 3-pointers away from the program's single game record. Carroll also sank 78 percent (18-23) of their free throws on the afternoon. Augustana finished with a shooting percentage of .446 (25-56), which includes converting just nine percent (1-11) of their 3-pointers.
Emilie Wizner led all scorers with 23 points in just 24 minutes, while Chloe Halverson had a Senior Day to remember with a career-high 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range.Natalie Gricius added 17 points and is now just 34 points shy of becoming the 18th player in program history to reach 1,000 for a career. Julia Lokker added 13 points off the bench, while Rangel's record-breaking day ended with 11 points, five rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
Augustana was led by Audrey Erickson's 15 points, while Paige Melton added 12 on 4-of-6 shooting. Cali Papez and Tia Lewis each chipped in with 10 points for the Vikings.
With two games remaining in the regular season, Carroll has the number two seed locked up for the 2025 CCIW Tournament, with the final two rounds of that event being held at Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill. The Pioneers will be in action again on Wednesday when they'll travel to North Park. That game will begin at 7 p.m. from North Park Gymnasium in Chicago, Ill.
