WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College basketball celebrated its Senior Day by earning a second straight NEWMAC win with a 61-41 performance versus Mount Holyoke College on Saturday at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.
Prior to the game, Wellesley recognized senior Caitlin Windross' (Eastvale, Calif.) contributions to the Blue. Windross finished the game with a season best and team high 18 points.
First-year Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) added 16 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Blue (8-14 Overall, 3-6 NEWMAC). First-year Stacy Chen (Minneapolis, Minn.) contributed 11 points and six boards. Sophomore Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) filled the stat sheet with eight steals, seven assists, six rebounds and five points.
The Lyons (4-19 Overall, 0-9 NEWMAC) received 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals from sophomore Hannah Goen (New London, N.H.). Senior Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Maine) also reached double figures with 10 points. Junior Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.) tallied eight points and grabbed a game best 11 rebounds.
The Lyons raced out to a 12-2 with McGonagle and senior Katie Rha (Douglaston, N.Y.) scoring five points each. The Blue answered to finish the quarter on an 11-4 run, to cut the margin to 16-13, with six points by Shane and a baseline jumper by first-year Proud Techarungchaikul (Bangkok, Thailand) at the buzzer.
Wellesley opened the second with five straight points to take its first lead of the contest at 18-16. The Blue later trailed 21-20, but responded with a Techarungchaikul trey and a Shane layup for a four-point lead. With time running down in the half, Barrow stole the ball in the backcourt and went in for a layup before the clock expired to give Wellesley a 28-23 lead at the break.
The Blue outscored Mount Holyoke 18-2 in the third and took their biggest lead into the fourth, 46-25.
In an evenly played final quarter, Wellesley continued to hold a comfortable lead throughout en route to the victory.
Wellesley and Mount Holyoke each take the court at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 19. The Blue are on the road at WPI while the Lyons play host to Babson College.
