Cold start costs Waynesburg at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. (February 15) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team played first-place Washington & Jefferson even for the final three quarters but could not overcome an early deficit as the Yellow Jackets fell 70-53 at W&J on Saturday.

Waynesburg falls to 12-11 on the year and 7-11 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. With the defeat, the Jackets have been eliminated from PAC Tournament contention. W&J keeps pace as the top overall team in the PAC at 20-4, 17-2 PAC.

The Jackets shot 1-of-18 from the field in the opening quarter. The Presidents led just 9-3 with two minutes left in the period before draining three treys in an 11-0 run over the final 1:45 to lead 20-3 after the first.

Waynesburg used an 11-2 run to trim the margin to 24-14 less than four minutes into the second quarter. The Presidents answered with a 12-4 response of their own and went into the half up 36-19.

The Jackets went over six minutes without a field goal to open the third quarter as the W&J lead stretched to 49-24. Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W. Va. / Calvary Christian Academy) had eight points as the Jackets closed the frame on a 12-0 run to make it a 49-36 ballgame heading into the fourth. The closest Waynesburg came in the final 10 minutes was a 13-point deficit.

Dayton finished with 17 points, one shy of matching her season-high. She added five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) had 14 points and five boards.

The Jackets shot 28.1 percent from the field and just 3-of-25 from deep while W&J shot 41.3 percent from the floor and made seven threes at 30.4 percent.

Waynesburg won the turnover margin 15-12 and points off turnovers 11-6.

The Jackets travel to Franciscan on Wednesday.
