Potsdam, NY – Leading wire-to-wire, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team saw three finish in double figures as the Golden Knights picked up a 67-60 Liberty League victory over Union College Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights improved to 9-13 overall and 5-10 in the Liberty League, while the Garnet Chargers fell to 12-10 and 9-6. Clarkson faces Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon.
Despite a slow start in the opening minutes, Clarkson came out firing in the first half, making shots from the perimeter seemingly at will against the Garnet Chargers. Raelin Burns and Bella Doyle made back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the first period to make it 13-6 and two more 3-pointers from Fallon Griffin near the end of the quarter put the Knights up by 11, forcing Union to take a full timeout. The Garnet Chargers began to play catch up offensively at the start of the second, pulling to within five. A three-point play from Raelin Burns on a layup-and-one put the Knights back up by nine, and moments later two straight give-and-go plays between Bella Doyle and Cassidy Dumont converted, but the Garnet Chargers had the last bucket of the half, putting the margin at seven at the break.
Each team finished one shot short of making 50% of its shots from the floor in the opening floor, but the Knights had five 3-pointers to Union's two to help make up the gap at the half.
Clarkson made the first two baskets of the third quarter to help return the lead to double figures, where it would be maintained for the remainder of the period. The Knights scored their 46th point on a layup from Bella Doyle, which already surpassed the total for Clarkson in the first meeting between the two teams. A late 3-pointer from the corner by the Garnet Chargers reduced the Union deficit to 11 through 30 minutes.
Clarkson started the fourth with a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 14, but Union slowly climbed back into the contest, eventually getting to within four after a jumper with a little under four minutes to go. However, Cassidy Dumont hit a key 3-pointer from the elbow at 4:09 to provide a bit more breathing room and the Knights made enough free throws down the stretch to claim the win.
Raelin Burns finished with a game-high 21 points, shooting 7-for-14 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Bella Doyle had a double-double by the third quarter and ended up with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Cassidy Dumont nearly matched Doyle with 15 points and eight rebounds.
For Union, Jelena Perovic closed with 20 points and eight rebounds and Jenna Forman tossed in 16 points to go along with her eight boards.
