Keuka College Falls to SUNY Poly 61-51

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — On Friday night, the Keuka College Women's Basketball team lost to SUNY Poly 61-51 in an Empire 8 Conference game at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.

Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) led the way for Keuka College (5-18, 0-13 Empire 8) with 21 points. Brooke Burd (Canisteo, N.Y. / Canisteo-Greenwood) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

SUNY Poly 61 at Keuka College 51

The Wolves started strong against the Wildcats, building a 9-4 lead over the first half of the quarter. SUNY Poly cut the margin back to one, but Mary Cotter widened the gap with a three. Brooke Burd forced a SUNY Poly turnover and Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) rewarded the defensive effort with a three to make it 15-8 and forced SUNY Poly to use a timeout. Keuka led by four, 17-13 after the first.

SUNY Poly found their stroke in the second quarter from three. The Wildcats made four of their first five triples. The last of them gave the visitors a 27-25 lead. Keuka got a three from Lillian Mullen (Canisteo, N.Y. / Canisteo-Greenwood) to snap a 10-0 run for SUNY Poly, however, SUNY Poly led 30-28 at the half.

The Wildcats widened their lead with five straight to start the second half until Brooke Burd knocked down an elbow jumper for the Wolves. SUNY Poly remained ahead for the duration of the quarter. Lillian Mullen hit her second three of the game to cut into the lead as SUNY Poly led by five going to the final quarter.

SUNY Poly started fast again with five unanswered points to extend their lead to 10 at 47-37. The Green and Gold cut it down to six on a three by Mary Cotter in the final minute, but that would be as close as Keuka would make it as SUNY Poly continued on to the 61-51 victory.

KC Notes:

  • The Wolves are now 19-15 all-time against SUNY Poly, but the Wildcats have won the last four meetings
  • Friday was the first time Keuka College and SUNY Poly met as members of the Empire 8 Conference. The two previously met 20 times in the North Eastern Athletic Conference regular season and twice more in NEAC Tournament Championship games
  • Keuka College hit seven threes on Friday, moving into seventh on the single-season list with 144 this year
  • Brooke Burd moved into seventh on the single season rebounding list. The sophomore now has 223 on the campaign
  • Sydney Brown's three pushed her into the top ten for threes this season. Brown leads the Wolves with 46 triples.
  • Ellen Lavonas (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) hit the 300 career rebounding mark
  • The loss snapped Keuka's three-game winning streak on Valentine's Day

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves are back at home on Saturday against Utica University. The game with the Pioneers has been moved up an hour due to the weather and will tip at 1 p.m. Before the game, there will be the annual senior day ceremony for the Keuka College Women's Basketball team as well.
