Women's Basketball Clamps Down On Benedictine

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College won its ninth straight game on Saturday after allowing its second-fewest points of the season in a 55-36 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victory over Benedictine at Time of Grace Center.

The Warriors (14-7, 11-1 NACC), who never trailed in the contest, outscored the Eagles in points from turnovers, paint, second chance, fast breaks, and bench.

WLC used five points from senior Kara Troxel (Bonduel, Wis.) to jump out to a 9-1 lead with 6:21 remaining in the first quarter. After some back-and-forth action, a 6-0 individual scoring spurt from junior Jayden Hill (Kenosha, Wis.) put Wisconsin Lutheran up 17-6 with 2:42 left. The teams exchanged buckets to end the opening quarter and the Warriors held a 19-10 advantage after one period of play. WLC netted 16 of its 19 first-quarter points in the paint.

Nearly all of the second quarter featured back-and-forth scoring, as Wisconsin Lutheran maintained a nine-point lead, 27-18, with 2:30 to play. The Warriors closed out the final minutes of the half with a 5-0 spurt and headed to the locker room ahead 32-18. Junior Jayden Hill (Kenosha, Wis.) scored 11 of her 13 points for the game in the first half.

Both teams again alternated buckets to start the third quarter. WLC used a 6-0 run midway through to extend its lead to 19 points, 42-23, following a layup from Hill with 2:46 on the clock. Each team scored once in the final minutes, as Wisconsin Lutheran led 43-26 heading to the fourth. The Warriors held BenU to just 18.2 percent shooting in the quarter.

A three-pointer from senior Lexy Smit (Brandon, Wis.) put WLC up by 21 points with 7:50 remaining in the game. Benedictine couldn't pull any closer than 19 down over the final six-and-a-half minutes, and freshman Lily Oiler (Watertown, Wis.) gave Wisconsin Lutheran a game-high 23-point advantage with a three-point play at the 3:41 mark.

Hill paced the Warriors with 13 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Margie Stevens (Oneida, Wis.) finished with nine points and seven rebounds, while Troxel also chipped in nine points. WLC shot 35.9 percent (23-for-64) from the floor. 

Olympia Kokkines scored a team-high eight points for the Eagles (11-10, 7-5 NACC), who shot just 22.4 percent (11-for-49) for the game.

Wisconsin Lutheran remains at Time of Grace Center on Wednesday for a NACC matchup with MSOE (12-9, 8-4 NACC). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
