Bench sparks Pirate women past Pioneers

More news about: Whitworth

PORTLAND, Ore. – Addyson Gallatin came off Whitworth's bench to drain five three-point shots, sparking the visiting Pirates to a 73-49 win at Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Friday night at the Pamplin Center.

Whitworth swept the season series with the Pioneers (4-16 overall, 1-10 NWC), allowing the Bucs to improve to 8-12 this season, 5-6 in the conference.

Whitworth stormed out to a 25-11 lead in the first quarter by making 6 of 7 from three-point range.  Alex Goetz, Ashley Peterson and Addyson Gallatin made two each.  Gallatin made her second at the buzzer for the 14-point margin.

Gallatin hit her third trey to cap a 7-0 start for the Pirates in the second, extending the lead to 32-11.  Each time the Pioneers cut into the margin, Whitworth extended the lead back to 21 on three more occasions.  The final time came at halftime when Mya Bair's driving layin put the Bucs ahead 46-24 before L&C made one of two free throws in the final seconds.  Peterson led Whitworth with 12 points at the break.

As hot as the Pirates were in the first quarter, they came out cold in the third while missing their first nine shots from the floor.  The Pioneers were able to pull within 50-36 on a jumper by DJ Kendrick.  Peterson and Gallatin answered with consecutive three-pointers as Whitworth retook a 20-point advantage and led 58-38 heading to the final quarter.

Gallatin hit her fifth three-pointer of the game early in the fourth to give the Pirates a 65-40 lead, capping a 7-2 run to start the period.  It was Whitworth's largest lead of the game to that point, allowing head coach Kenny Love to rest most of his starters for the final quarter.

Gallatin went 5 of 8 from behind the three-point line to tie her previous career high of 15 points set in the season opener vs. North Park.  Peterson added 15 points, while Neilsen tied her career high of 13 points, with ten coming in the final period.  Mya Bair grabbed 12 of the Pirates' 49 rebounds and blocked three shots.  Whitworth, already the best free throw shooting team in the NWC this season, went 16 of 18 at the charity stripe.

Lauren Frederickson scored a game-high 20 points for L&C and was the only Pioneer player in double figures.

The Pirates play at Willamette on Saturday with a chance to sweep the season series against their third straight opponent.
