ONEONTA, N.Y. – With both teams tied at 20 at halftime, a huge third quarter in which the Cardinals outscored the Red Dragons 26-7 propelled the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team to a 62-55 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over Oneonta earning the season sweep. Junior guard Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) led all scorers with 21 points to pair with six rebounds and an assist.
Senior guard/forward Payton Couture (Redford, N.Y. / Saranac) reached double figures with 14 points to go with five rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block. Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) and Kayla Johannesen (Hyde Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourdes) had solid performances with eight and seven points respectively. Johannesen was strong on the boards grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds as well as recording three assists, two blocks, and a steal while Peterson-Ross had six rebounds, two blocks, and an assist. Selma Diesz (Bekkestua, Norway / Nadderud VGS) and Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) both contributed five points while Diesz had six rebounds and two assists and Walcott had 10 rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.
For the Red Dragons, Emma Schwarzbeck led her team in scoring with 16 points. Amanda Zuntag was in double figures as well with 15 points and had a game-high 16 rebounds for a double-double.
The Cardinals shot well in every category, shooting 40.0% from behind the arc knocking down 8 of 20, shooting a solid 36.0% from the field, and 78.3% from the free throw line. The Red Dragons only shot 26.0% from the field, 18.8% from the three-point line, and 60.9% from the free throw line. The Cardinals won the battle on the boards 45-39 however, the Red Dragons had more offensive rebounds leading to 14 second-chance points while the Cardinals had nine. The Red Dragons won the turnover battle and recorded 16 points off turnovers compared to the Cardinals four.
Plattsburgh State rises to 12-9 (8-6 SUNYAC) with the win and is back in action Friday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m. when they travel to Oswego State. Oneonta falls to 10-12 (7-8 SUNYAC) with the loss and is back in action on Friday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m. when they travel to Cortland.
A three-pointer from Couture started the scoring in the first quarter, and another three-pointer for Plattsburgh this time from Wilson allowed the Cardinals to jump out to an 8-3 lead at the 6:28 mark. Oneonta cut into Plattsburgh's lead after scoring back-to-back baskets, however, a layup from Wilson to end the quarter made the score 12-7 Cardinals after one quarter of play.
Midway through the second quarter, a Zuntag layup cut the Cardinals' lead to two, however, two free throws from Couture cushioned Plattsburgh's lead to 18-14 at the 4:35 mark. The Red Dragons cut the Cardinals' lead to two once again and Couture gave the Cardinals a cushion with a layup that made the score 20-16. However, back-to-back baskets for Oneonta to end the second quarter tied the score at 20 at halftime.
While play was back and forth to start the third quarter with multiple lead changes the Cardinals' offense woke up in the third quarter, outscoring the Red Dragons 46-27. Halfway through the quarter back-to-back three-pointers from Wilson and Peterson-Ross gave the Cardinals the lead for good at 30-25. A layup from Oneonta broke up the run but a jumper from Wilson kickstarted a 16-0 tear that featured 11 points from Wilson and gave Plattsburgh a 46-27 lead at the end of the third quarter.
After Peterson-Ross made two free throws the Cardinals led 51-29 at the 7:37 mark, their largest lead of the game but the Red Dragons battled back and cut the lead to single digits using multiple runs. Oneonta used two 7-0 runs that featured six points from Schwarzbeck and made the score 55-48 at the 2:46 mark, cutting the Cardinals' lead to single digits. Four straight points from Johannesen pushed the Cardinals' lead to 59-48 at the 1:42 mark but a 5-0 burst from the Red Dragons cut Plattsburgh's lead to six. A late layup from Johannesen and a free throw from Couture put the game away for Plattsburgh as the Cardinals went on to win 62-55.
