Potsdam, NY – A big second quarter for RIT allowed the Tigers to build a significant early lead from which the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team could not overcome, as the Golden Knights dropped a 59-34 decision on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 8-13 overall and 4-10 in the Liberty League, while RIT kept pace with the top of the league at 12-8 and 10-3. Clarkson hosts Union College and Ithaca College next weekend, celebrating the senior members of the Green and Gold.
Both teams suffered through a slow start, as the score was stuck at 0-0 and 3-2 in favor of RIT for long stretches of time. Some free throws for each team broke the drought, but each was below 20% from the field in the opening quarter, with RIT at 18.2% (2-for-11) and Clarkson at just 6.7% (1-for-15). The Tigers were able to get inside on the Knights in the second quarter and found plenty of offense, but the Knights missed five more shots to start the period before finally converting on a short jumper from Cassidy Dumont at the 5:34 mark. The Tigers finished the quarter at 8-for-17 from the floor, on their way to 20 points in the period, to take a 29-9 lead at the half.
The third quarter saw both teams score at a regular pace, and unfortunately the Golden Knights' 18-point effort in the third quarter kept them at the same distance from which they started at halftime. For the remainder of the game, the margin hovered around the mid-20s as RIT picked up the win.
Bella Doyle finished with 12 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocked shots, and 3 steals, while Raelin Burns chipped in 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting.
For RIT, Caroline Henderson was 5-for-10 from the floor with four 3-pointers to score 16 points. Kaitlyn Bockelman was just short of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds while also adding in four steals.
