RIVER FOREST, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – Freshman Abby Cole (Fond du Lac, Wis.) scored a career-high 25 points off the bench and junior Jayden Hill (Kenosha, Wis.) posted her second career double-double as Wisconsin Lutheran College flew past Dominican 78-35 on Wednesday at Igini Sports Forum.
The Warriors (13-7, 10-1 NACC), who moved into a first-place tie atop the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference standings, held an opponent to their lowest point output of the season.
The Stars scored the first basket of the game to account for their only lead of the contest, and WLC came out hot by responding with a 14-1 scoring run for its first double-digit advantage at the 3:38 mark of the first quarter. DU came within seven points at 16-9 before Wisconsin Lutheran netted the final nine points of the period for a 25-9 lead. Cole collected 10 points in the quarter for the Warriors, who shot 56.3 percent (9-for-16) from the floor.
WLC scored the first nine points of the second quarter behind buckets from four different players to open up a 25-point lead. The margin remained above 20 points for all but the opening 1:04 of the period. A 7-0 run over the final 3:43 gave Wisconsin Lutheran a comfortable 43-15 halftime advantage. Six different players scored in the quarter for the Warriors, who held an opponent to under 10 points for a fifth consecutive quarter.
The two teams exchanged points for the opening few minutes of the third quarter, before Cole capped a 6-0 WLC spurt with a layup at the 5:29 mark for a 53-23 lead. Sophomore Courtney Park (Rockford, Ill.) scored the final six points for the period for Wisconsin Lutheran, which held a 64-29 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Warriors opened the fourth quarter with eight straight points, and a three-pointer from freshman Taylor Ignatowski (Germantown, Wis.) gave them their largest lead of the game at 75-31 with 3:36 remaining. WLC held Dominican to just six points in the final stanza, marking the sixth time over the last seven quarters limiting an opponent under 10 points.
Cole poured in a game- and season-high 25 points on 10-for-15 shooting while adding seven rebounds. Hill finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for her second career double-double. Senior Kara Troxel (Bonduel, Wis.) scored nine points, while sophomore Margie Stevens (Oneida, Wis.) tallied a season-high 11 rebounds, eight points, and six assists. Wisconsin Lutheran outscored the Stars 26-8 off turnovers, 50-14 in the paint, 17-4 in second chance points, 11-2 on fast breaks, and 45-13 off the bench. The Warriors shot 45.3 percent (29-for-64) from the floor in the game.
Melissa Gomez scored 10 points for DU (5-15, 1-10 NACC), which was held to 22.2 percent (12-for-54) shooting from the field.
