WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College basketball fell 56-38 to Babson College in a NEWMAC matchup Wednesday night at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.
Senior Emily Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) paced the Beavers (11-9 Overall, 3-3 NEWMAC) with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Samantha Reale (North Attleboro, Mass.) added eight points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
The Blue (6-13 Overall, 1-5 NEWMAC) received a team best points from first-year Stacy Chen (Minneapolis, Minn.). First-year Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) registered eight points and five boards. Sophomore Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) finished with seven points, five rebounds, three assists and a couple of steals. First-year Emaleena Elson (Irvine, Calif.) contributed five points.
Babson jumped out to a 6-1 lead and later led 9-4, midway through the first. Wellesley cut the lead to one after buckets from first-year Bridget Sheahan (Bedford, Mass.) and junior Arla Hofer (Las Vegas, Nev.) accounted for the only points by either team in the final five minutes of the quarter.
Wellesley took its first lead of the contest when Chen opened the second with a layup. Babson then went on a 10-0 run for a 19-10 advantage. The visitors continued to click on offense for the rest of the frame and shot 55.6% from the floor to take a 34-23 lead into halftime.
The Blue began the third with a pair of hoops by Chen and Barrow to cut the deficit to seven. After four minutes of being held scoreless, Babson ended the quarter with a 14-5 run for a 48-32 margin after 30 minutes.
In a low-scoring fourth quarter, Babson held an 8-6 edge in points to account for the 56-38 final.
Each team competes at 1:00 PM in NEWMAC games on Saturday, February 8. The Blue travel to Salve Regina University while Babson hosts Wheaton College.
