BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Feb. 5) -- Five players scored in double figures to lead the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team to an 89-62 win over host Geneva College in Presidents' Athletic Conference play Wednesday evening in Beaver Falls.
The win coupled with a loss by second place Allegheny strengthens W&J's hold on first place in the conference. W&J improves to 15-1 in the conference and 18-3 overall.
Sophomore center Katie Kovalchick scored a career-high 20 points on a 10-of-13 effort from the field. Junior guard Stellanie Loutsion tallied 14 points while senior guard Adalynn Cherry recorded 13 points.
Senior guard Meghan Dryburgh filled the stat sheet with 13 points, 16 rebounds, eight assists, three blocks and three steals. The double-double is the eighth of the season for Dryburgh. Dryburgh now has 1,102 rebounds for her career. Senior guard Bryn Bezjak added 12 markers for the Presidents.
The Presidents pushed out to an early 13-2 lead less than midway through the first quarter. Bezjak accounted for the final seven points of the opening quarter for the Presidents, who led by a 22-10 margin after 10 minutes of play.
The advantage swelled to as many as 20 points in the second quarter following four-straight points by Loutsion to extend the lead to 34-14 at the 6:40 mark. Geneva countered with an 11-2 run to trim the deficit to 36-25 at halftime.
W&J put the game away early in the third quarter. A pair of three-point field goals by Cherry extended the lead to 47-29 with 7:26 to play in the frame. Three minutes later, Kovalchick scored consecutive field goals to push the W&J lead to 57-36 at the 4:40 mark. Raegan Kadlecik and Jacey Mullen found the scoring column late in the third as W&J took a 64-45 heading to the fourth.
The Presidents continued to hold a commanding lead throughout the fourth quarter as they completed the season sweep of the Golden Tornadoes. Layups by Jaden Wan and Shannon Conley capped the 89-62 victory.
W&J had its way with Geneva inside. The Presidents posted a 52-30 advantage in points in the paint and led by a 51-35 margin in rebounding.
The Presidents converted 46.5 percent from the field (33-of-71) and made 81 percent of its free throw attempts (18-of-22).
W&J heads to Saint Vincent College for a conference game on Saturday, Feb. 8. Start time in Latrobe is scheduled for 4 p.m.
