Women’s Basketball Falls to Cortland at Home in SUNYAC Action

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – After two strong quarters of play from Cortland, the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team trailed by double digits at halftime and weren't able to come back and fell 86-47 to Cortland at home in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. Junior center Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) led the Cardinals in points with 14 to go with five rebounds.

Sophomore guard Rosie Sculco (Amsterdam, N.Y. /Amsterdam) recorded a career-high 12 points, grabbed two rebounds, and picked up an assist in the overall effort. Sophomore guard Selma Deisz (Bekkestua, Norway / Nadderud VGS) contributed eight points and four rebounds. Junior guard Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. Johnstown) led the team in rebounding with six, and first-year forward Kaelyn Morgan put in four points to go with three rebounds.

For the Red Dragons, Kayla Campbell led the team with a game-high 25 points to go with eight rebounds. Jackie Funk, Brooke Tillotson, and Joleen Lusk were in double figures as well with 14, 12, and 10 respectively.

Both teams were solid from behind the arc as the Cardinals knocked down 5 of 13 at 38.5% and the Red Dragons knocked down 7 of 18 at 38.9%. The Red Dragons were efficient from the field overall, shooting 49.3% compared to the Cardinals' 31.4%. The Cardinals were very efficient at the stripe, making 10 of 12 at 83.3% while the Red Dragons made 13 of 14 at 92.9%. The Red Dragons had the edge in the rebound battle 39-31 and recorded 10 second-chance points to the Cardinals' six. The Cardinals had double-digit turnovers which led to 23 points off turnovers for the Red Dragons while the Cardinals only had two points off turnovers.

Plattsburgh State falls to 10-8 (6-5 SUNYAC) and next hosts Morrisville tomorrow, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. Cortland moves to 14-3 (9-1 SUNYAC) and next travels to Potsdam tomorrow, Feb. 1 for a 2 p.m. tip-off.

Cortland jumped out to a 7-2 lead early at the 8:22 mark but a three from Deisz and then a layup as well cut into Cortland's lead and made the score 11-7 Red Dragons. A jumper from Campbell pushed Cortland's lead to 17-10 but the Cardinals responded with a layup from Kayla Johannesen (Hyde Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourdes) and made the score 17-12 at the 3:40 mark. Cortland countered with an 8-0 run to end the quarter and extended their lead to 25-12 after one quarter of play.

A 10-0 run to open the second quarter from Cortland extended the Red Dragons lead to 35-12 at the 5:57 mark. After a few minutes of scoreless action, a three-pointer from Sculco broke up the Cortland run, and a layup at the end of the second quarter from Sculco made the score 39-19 Red Dragons at halftime.

Despite the Cardinals scoring their most points in the third quarter the Red Dragons still outscored them 25-17. A layup plus the foul for Walcott cut into Cortland's lead but the Cardinals couldn't generate any scoring runs. Each time Plattsburgh scored, Cortland responded so the Cardinals didn't have any momentum and weren't able to cut into the deficit and trailed 64-36 at the end of the third quarter.

The Cardinals got the scoring started in the fourth quarter with a jumper from Walcott but still trailed by double-digits. A 10-0 run from Cortland pushed their lead to 84-43 at the 2:55 mark putting the game out of reach as the Cardinals fell 86-47.
