Big Third Quarter Powers York (Pa.) to Road Win

FREDERICK, MD – The York College women's basketball squad snapped their two-game losing streak with an 82-58 win at Hood College on Saturday afternoon in Frederick, Maryland.
The Spartans took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Blazers 26-12 to take command of the game.
The Spartans improve to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in the league. The Blazers fall to 5-12 overall and are now 1-5 in the conference.
 
How It Happened
• The Spartans got off to a slow start as the Blazers led 13-10 with over a minute and a half left in the opening quarter. The Spartans got to within one on a pair of Morgan Adams free throws but the Blazers scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes of play.
• The teams went back-and-forth to start the second quarter as the teams alternated scoring before the Blazers pushed out to a 26-20 lead on an Aliyah Taylor free throw with 5:40 left in the half. Makenna Zimmerman then began a 12-2 Spartan run with a bucket at the 4:42 mark. That run, fueled by five points from Zimmerman, saw the Spartans turn a four-point deficit into a four-point lead. The Spartans were 5-for-7 from the floor on the run while they were also 2-for-3 from the stripe. The Blazers got a bucket right before the half as the Green and White led 32-30 at the break.
• The second half started with a pair of Adams buckets to push the lead to six. Taylor hit a pair of free throws but Taylor Burda buried a three pointer to push the lead to seven. Hood made one last charge, slicing the Spartan lead to three at 39-36 with 7:19 left in the third quarter. The Spartans answered with a game-clinching 19-6 run. Breana Grim and Burda both had six points on the run as the Spartans were 6-for-8 from the floor including 4-for-6 from three and 3-for-4 from the stripe.
• The Spartans maintained control of the game in the fourth as the lead never fell below 14 the rest of the game. York built the lead to as many as 25 before settling for the 24-point win.

The Spartans shot 41.7% (30-for-72) from the floor including 7-of-18 (38.9%) from distance … the Spartans were 15-for-22 (68.2%) from the stripe while the Blazers were 13-for-25 (52%) from the line … Hood shot 38.6% (22-for-57) from the field while they were 1-for-11 (9.1%) from distance … the Blazers out-rebounded the Spartans 46-42 as both teams had 18 offensive rebounds … York held a 15-12 edge in assists … the Spartans did a great job of taking care of the ball with just seven turnovers while the Blazers committed 18 miscues which resulted in 16 Spartan points … York had a 30-24 edge in paint points and an 18-15 margin in second chance points … Tiffany Manning led the Blazers with 14 points and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes of play … Manning was 6-for-10 from the field and 2-for-3 from the stripe … Aliyah Taylor added 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal for the Blazers … Taylor was 3-for-7 from the floor and was 5-for-12 from the stripe.

The Spartans have now won 10 straight against the Blazers as they improve to 17-2 all-time against Hood … the 24-point win is York's fourth win by 20 points or more … the victory is just York's second road win of the year as the Spartans are now 2-4 away from Wolf Gymnasium … York attempted 15 more shots than the Blazers … York has shot the ball well from three in the last two games as York is 13-for-32 (40.6%) from distance in their last two games … the Spartans have also been good from the stripe recently as they are 31-for-43 (72%) in their last two contests … York was out-rebounded for the third straight game … York blocked another six shots as they have now blocked six shots or more in eight games this year … the Spartans put four players in double figures led by Alyssa Hocker as she notched 18 points and eight rebounds in her 28 minutes of play … Morgan Adams added 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three blocks and a steal for the grad forward … Breana Grim contributed 13 points, four rebounds, six assists, a blocked shot and three steals in 34 minutes of action … Taylor Burda had a good day with 12 points and four rebounds as she hit four threes in the win … Makenna Zimmerman came off the bench as she had nine points, seven rebounds, three assists, a blocked shot and steal in 17 minutes of action.
