CONWAY, Ark. - Women's Basketball got back to their winning ways against Hendrix, as they cruised to a 55-41 victory.
The story of the game was the forward play from the Vikings' frontcourt. Briaiah Lewis finished with 14 points to go along with 8 rebounds. Her frontcourt mate, Elly Callihan, was masterful as well, as she poured in 12 points to go along with nine rebounds. The stingy defense of guards Jayda Wood and Jeryn Jarrett was also instrumental, as they combined for a total of 9 steals. Jarrett's six steals is tied for second for most steals in a game in school history.
It was a slow start offensively by the Vikings, as they went scoreless in the opening 6 minutes against a hungry Hendrix squad. After falling behind 9-0 midway through the first, Emma Hempker found herself open for a mid-range jump shot that got the Vikings going. Following a media timeout, Lewis dished the ball to Sylvia Kahoro who made a clutch three-pointer to bring Berry within 4 with just over 2 minutes left in the first quarter. A few plays later, the Vikings executed an inbounds play to perfection as Lewis handed the ball to Kenadie Lee who buried a jump shot from the short corner to tie the game at 9 to cap off the quarter.
Berry continued their hot streak in the second quarter, as Kahoro faked out the defense and found herself wide open as she drained another three-pointer that gave her team a 12-9 lead early in the quarter. Later in the quarter, Jayda Wood joined in on the Vikings three-point barrage as she buried a three-pointer off of a terrific feed from Jeryn Jarrett. On the next possession, Lewis showcased her ability to finish contested shots as she buried a pull-up jumper to give the Vikings a 23-19 lead with 2:39 left to play in the first half. The Vikings closed out the half in impressive fashion as Jarrett picked the pocket of a Warrior ball handler and finished a layup to give the Vikings a comfortable 27-19 lead at the half.
The second half began much differently than the first half, as Jayda Wood went on a 4-0 run of her own to start the half, giving the Vikings a 12-point lead with 8 minutes left in the third. A few minutes later, Jarrett came up with another deflection that ended up in the hands of Wood, who went coast-to-coast to finish a fast break layup that gave Berry a 35-22 lead with 4:50 left to play in the half. The Warriors battled back though, as they utilized a 9-2 run to keep them within striking distance to close out the quarter.
The fourth quarter opened up with a couple of baskets from Hendrix that got their home crowd on their feet. With a dwindling 40-35 lead, the Vikings answered in a big way. Sylvia Kahoro weaved her way to the rim and finished a layup that made the score 42-35 with just over six minutes to play. Just seconds later, Jeryn Jarrett came up with a steal and Elly Callihan did the rest with a nice layup to push the Berry lead back to nine, 44-35. A few plays later, Jeryn Jarrett found Elly Callihan, who laced a wing three-pointer to extend the lead back to ten with just five minutes left. The smothering full-court pressure from the Vikings in the final minutes, made ball control extremely difficult for the Hendrix offense late in the game. With just under four minutes to play, Sylvia Kahoro penetrated the defense and sent in a textbook pass to Elly Callihan, who finished the layup to give Berry a 53-38 lead. The Vikings' defensive pressure reigned supreme in the final two minutes, as Berry came out victorious by a final score of 55-41.
With the win, the Vikings improve to 13-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play. They will be in action again on the road against Rhodes on January 26 at 2 PM ET.
