Regals Extend Winning Streak to Eight

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's basketball poured in a season-high 15 three-pointers en route to a 78-59 home win against Caltech on Saturday evening. The Regals (12-3, 3-2 SCIAC) won their eighth-consecutive game, while the Beavers (6-7, 0-4 SCIAC) continued their skid to open conference play.

Cal Lutheran got off to a hot start offensively thanks to the backcourt duo of Janna Holley and Sara Mills. Holley had four buckets in the first quarter to go along with three assists. Each of her assists in the period would lead to a three-pointer from Mills, as the two combined for 17 of the Regals' 19 first-quarter points. Cal Lutheran would lead by 19 heading into the second.

From there, Caltech never got within striking distance, as the Regals would stifle any comeback attempt that the Beavers put forth. Late in the third quarter, Karina McMillan would score eight points in three-straight possessions to give Cal Lutheran a 19-point lead.

An offensive explosion like this is nothing new for the Regals, as their 15 three-pointers bested their previous season high set earlier this week. Everything seems to be clicking for Kelli DiMuro's team, as she praised her team's "grit, defensive intensity, and fluidity on offense."

Holley would finish with a season-high 23 points (8-11 FG, 3-3 3PT, 4-4 FT), adding four offensive boards, six assists, and four steals. She has impressed in her junior season, shooting 39.3% from three, averaging 4.2 assists (third in the SCIAC) with a 2.03 assist-to-turnover ratio (third in the SCIAC), and averaging 2.4 steals.

Fueled by her hot hand in the first quarter, Mills dropped in a season-high five three-pointers as she terrorized the Beavers from beyond the arc.

Alexa Greenwood scored a season-high 16 points (6-11 FG, 4-6 3PT) as she continues to knock down threes with efficiency. She is shooting a team-high 42.2% from distance this year.

Kaiya Mack set up her teammates for success all night, collecting a season-high eight assists. She has helped Holley shoulder the role of floor general recently, totaling 17 assists in the past three games.

Alline Ballard and Aliya DiMuro once again controlled the paint, which has become a theme in every Cal Lutheran game this season. This was Ballard's sixth-straight game with 10+ rebounds, and she is now averaging 11.9 (third in the SCIAC). DiMuro has recorded consecutive games with double-digit boards, and she pairs her rebounding prowess with efficiency on the offensive end. She is shooting 58% from the field this season.

The Regals' 15 threes were the second-most in a game this year by a SCIAC team, and they swiped a season-high 13 steals.

Cal Lutheran's lethal offense is averaging the most points per game in the SCIAC (71.8). Its defense holds its opponents to the lowest three-point percentage in the SCIAC (26.5%). And the duo of Ballard and DiMuro gives it the highest average rebounding margin in the SCIAC (5.4)

With these trends, it is no surprise that the Beavers had trouble stopping the Regals on offense, were ice-cold from the three-point line (4-23), and lost the rebounding margin by 16.

Cal Lutheran will look to extend its winning streak even further in a showdown on the road against Chapman on Monday, January 20 at 4pm.
