ASHLAND, VA – The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's basketball team jumped out to a 28-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, pushed the lead to 54-18 at the half and never looked back in a 93-41 win over Roanoke in the first game of the RMC Tip-Off Classic Friday evening. The Blue Jays improve to 3-1 on the year with the win, while the Maroons slip to 1-3.
The Blue Jays led just 9-8 with 4:27 remaining in the first quarter after Roanoke's Nadia Snesarev splashed in a three-pointer, but a Macie Feldman free throw 17 seconds later ignited a 19-1 quarter-ending run that gave the Blue Jays a lead that would never be threatened. Six different players scored during the run for Johns Hopkins, which used back-to-back Beth Corelli three-pointers in a 50-second span to turn a 12-8 lead into a 18-8 advantage. Corelli (6) and Grace Soltes (5) combined for 11 of the 19 points during the 19-1 spurt.
A Jadyn Murray layup and back-to-back jumpers from Michaela O'Neil and Feldman to open the second quarter extended the run to 25-1 before Kiley Hylton halted the run with a layup and she added a jumper 25 seconds later after a Feldman layup to make it 36-13 with just over six minutes remaining in the first half.
Johns Hopkins would put the game away over the final six minutes of the second quarter as a Soltes layup after Hylton's jumper sprung an 18-5 Blue Jay run to account for the 54-18 halftime lead. Elisabeth Peebles dropped in a pair of three-pointers late in the half-ending run and Emily Collins scored six of her 12 points on the night during the run as well.
Johns Hopkins led by as many as 43 in the third quarter (68-25) and built a game-high 55-point lead late in the fourth (88-33) before closing out the 93-41 victory; the Blue Jays outscored the Maroons 16-10 in the third quarter and 23-13 in the fourth to lock down their second win of the season by 50 or more points.
Soltes led five Blue Jays in double figures as she scored 15 points off the bench to lead the way. In all, the Blue Jay bench contributed 58 points as Collins (12), Layla Henderson (11) and Quinn ODonnell (11) all hit for double figures off the bench. O'Neil was the only Blue Jay starter to reach double figures (10) as none of the five starters played more than 16 minutes in the victory.
Johns Hopkins shot 51.4% from the floor (37-of-72), held a 52-30 rebounding advantage and collected 21 second-chance points.
Hylton paced the Maroons with 12 points in just 15 minutes on the floor, while Snesarev added eight points and three assists. The Maroons shot just 27.9% from the floor (17-of-61) and were just 5-of-31 (.161) from beyond the arc.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, November 23 when the Blue Jays take on host Randolph-Macon on day two of the RMC Tipoff Classic (4 pm). The Yellow Jackets topped Dickinson, 60-53, in Friday's other game on day one of the tournament.
