Schenectady, N.Y.- A seven-point halftime deficit proved too much as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team dropped a Liberty League contest to Union, 60-45, Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights fall to 5-10 overall, 1-7 in the league while Union improves to 9-6 overall, 6-2 in the Liberty League. Clarkson will travel to RIT and William Smith next weekend, January 24th and 25th as the team continues league play.
After racing out to an early lead, following three-pointers from Bella Doyle and Fallon Griffin, Union would go on a 9-0 run midway through the opening quarter creating a 16-10 advantage. A midrange jumper from Cassidy Dumont with just under a minute remaining put a stop to the run, closing the gap to four as the buzzer sounded.
Another quick start in the second quarter for the Knights saw Doyle power through traffic to finish a contested layup in the paint while on the next possession Dumont would cash in on a wing three for a 17-16 lead. Addie Kea would put a stop to another Garnet Charger scoring run, spotting up for a top-of-the-key three while Dumont wriggled free on the following possession for a floater cutting the hosts lead down to just five with less than 60 seconds to go. With time winding down in the half, Olivia Cunningham pulled out a crafty step-back midrange, beating the buzzer and pushing the lead back up to 31-24 in favor of Union.
Dumont would continue her hot shooting coming out of the break, burying a wing three to open the second half. The Golden Knights would continue to struggle to contain the Union offense as the Garnet Chargers would again piece together a 7-0 run before Kea would get loose on a backdoor layup halting the charge. The hosts' lead would grow to as much as 12 through the third quarter before a buzzer beater jumper from Lexi Huiatt that seemed to tough every part of the rim, dropped through the net cutting the lead to eight, 43-35, headed into the final quarter of play.
Union would rattle off the first nine points of the fourth as the lead would grow to 17 before the Golden Knights were able to whittle it back to 12, following another Dumont long-range attempt. The hosts lead proved to be too much as that was the closest the Knights would get for the remainder of the contest.
Dumont would finish with 17 points and six rebounds for Clarkson while Doyle and Kea would both finish with seven. For the Garnet Chargers, Cunningham would post a double-double with 22 points and ten rebounds while Emma Riley chipped in 17 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists.
