MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Berry Women's Basketball took back to the Cage today for a matchup against Centre College, falling in the conference game 59-55.
Kenadie Lee and Karlee Armstrong led the charge for Berry putting up 15 each and being the only players in double figures.
The game began with a triple from each side showing the pace of the game to unwind. Lee tied it at 10 with 3:20 to go with a triple of her own but Centre punched right back to answer. With time winding down a late foul gave the Colonels a 17-13 advantage going into the second.
Centre built on their lead in the second with two triples and some key paint points, making the lead 14 at 29-15. Berry refused to give in to their opponent with Emma Hempker nailing a three and Callie Jackson timing in some clutch free throws to cut the deficit. The nine-point run for the Vikings brought the game back within focus and Berry was only down three at the half (34-31).
Berry finally regained their footing in the third, capturing their first lead since the beginning of the game with a layup by Elly Callihan. Now both teams were set to battle on the Cage floor, trading baskets with one another and finding grit. Jayda Wood finished off the third to tie it at 41 before the final 10 minutes of play began.
In the final period, Berry quickly went up by four with back-to-back buckets from leading scorers Armstrong and Lee, but Centre did the same and eventually built a three-point fortress with less than three minutes to go. Two turnovers in consecutive possessions where the Vikings needed to score helped the Colonels build a larger lead that would not leave the game to free throws at the end.
Allowing offensive rebounds crushed the Vikings today, giving up 12 and only snagging 6 for opportunities at second chance points, other than that the game was quite evenly matched.
