SPOKANE, Wash. – Visiting Puget Sound stormed to a 92-75 win over Whitworth in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Saturday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
The Pirates fell to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the NWC after allowing a season-high point total to the Loggers (2-9, 1-1). UPS ended a four-game losing streak.
Puget Sound used hot shooting to take a 47-36 lead at halftime. The Loggers made 53% of their shots in the first quarter and scored 24 points. They improved to 57% in the second period and scored 43. The 47 points were the most the Pirates had allowed in a half this season. Carmen Cruz had a dozen points off the bench at the break for UPS while Keely Maves had eight points for Whitworth.
The Loggers continued to surge offensively and extended the lead in the third quarter, opening a 20-point advantage when a pair of free throws by Addison Reardan made it 67-47. The Pirates were able to get within 70-54 at the end of the third quarter on a late driving lay in from Ashlyn Peterson.
After UPS used a 9-4 start to the fourth quarter to open a 79-58 advantage, it's largest lead of the game, Whitworth went on a 9-2 run to get within 81-67, including six points by Peterson. The Pirates were unable to sustain the momentum.
"They put a lot of bodies on the floor and are able to stay fresh, so its hard to sustain a run against them," said Whitworth head coach Kenny Love. "We didn't execute against the press as well as we would have liked."
Whitworth finished the game shooting 34.4% from the floor and 20% (6-30) from three-point range. The Bucs made 25 of 32 (78.1%) from the free throw line. Peterson led Whitworth with 17 points and three steals. Mya Bair, Juliana Jeross and Alex Goetz all scored 13 points apiece. Bair posted a double-double with 11 rebounds as the Bucs finished with a 44-42 edge on the boards.
"I was proud of how well we rebounded considering how big they are inside," Love said.
Paige Oh led Puget Sound with 22 points. She went 6 of 10 from beyond the three-point line, a big reason the Loggers finished 11-21 (52.4%) from distance. UPS finished the game 35-71 (49%) from the field. Emme Eisenman had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Loggers.
The previous season high point total by a Pirate opponent this season was 84 points at La Verne last month.
Whitworth will return to action next Friday by hosting Willamette in an NWC contest.
