WELLESLEY, Mass. – A 13-0 stretch in the fourth quarter gave Wellesley College basketball a 62-52 non-conference victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in the team's first game of the new year on Thursday afternoon at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

First year Stacy Chen (Minneapolis, Minn.) scored a season-high 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting to lead the Blue (4-7) offensively. Sophomore Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) shot 60% from the field with 15 points and assisted on four buckets. Classmate Mirella Funari (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored 12 points with five assists and four steals. First year Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) recorded a double-double for Wellesley, contributing 12 points and pulling down 11 boards.

Senior Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) had four threes as well, ending the contest with 13 points. First year Taylor Garabedian (Chesire, Mass.) had 12 points and rebounds with a trio of steals.

Wentworth opened the game on a 10-2 run that included five points from Amoddio before Wellesley found its footing with a pair of layups from Shane. The Bluer cut the gap to one at 13-12. A made three pointer by Carroll with two seconds left put the Leopards up 16-12 after one period of play.

The second quarter featured five lead changes with neither team ever up more than a possession on the other. A late tip-in layup from Chen put Wellesley up 30-27 at the end of the half.

Chen began the second half in the same manner she ended the first, with a layup. The Leopards then charged back with seven unanswered points, punctuated by an Amaddio triple, to grab a 34-32 advantage. The teams alternated baskets in an evenly matched rest of the third, with Wentworth up 42-41 at the end of the period.

The teams traded threes to start the fourth, courtesy of Barrow and Carroll. From 9:03 to 4:28, Wellesley launched a 13-0 offensive that put the game out of reach. The Leopards never got back with nine points as the Blue finished off a 62-52 win.

The Blue shot 19-of-54 (39.0%) as a team and went 11-for-16 (68.8%) at the foul line. The Leopards utilized 10 made three pointers. Wellesley won the battle of the rebounds (45-32) and both squads grabbed eight steals.
