Sophomore post Macy Miller scored 8 points in less than a minute to highlight a game-opening 21-2 run that started 10th/12th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a 61-42 win over Principia in the Bishop Classic/"Hoops for Hope" tournament on Monday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Fifth-year guard Kasey Schipfer opened the day's scoring with a pair of hoops and fifth-year guard Lauren Denison added a pair of free throws before Miller split a pair of free throws at the 7:52 mark.
Lamiya Terrell put the Panthers on the scoreboard with a lay-in, but Miller answered with a putback with 7:15 left in the first quarter. Miller then stole the ball in the backcourt and scored at the 7:08 mark, then scored off a pass from fifth-year point guard Elizabeth Homan with 6:33 to go before recording another steal and scoring off another Homan feed with 6:28 on the clock.
Three-pointers by junior guard Mia Guscoff and Denison finished off the Bishops' game-opening run midway through the period.
From that point on, the teams played evenly, with the Panthers outscoring the Bishops, 9-7, during the remainder of the first quarter; both teams posting 11 points during the second period; and Ohio Wesleyan on the plus side of a 22-20 count during the second half.
Miller posted her third double-double of the season, finishing with a team-high 16 points and sharing the team lead with 10 boards. Guscoff added 12 points, all from beyond the arc. Denison scored 11 points, and Schipfer recorded her second straight double-double with totals of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Schipfer's 10 points raised her career total to 1809, moving her into second place on the all-time Ohio Wesleyan scoring list, passing Krista Jacobs (1802 points from 1988-92).
Homan matched a season best with 12 assists. The dozen assists also broke the tournament single-game record, surpassing the mark of 10 set by Sarah McQuade against Penn State-DuBois on Dec. 29, 2011, and equaled by Megan Kuether against Goucher on Dec. 29, 2016.
