WASHINGTON, D.C. - The nationally ranked Catholic Cardinals (8-1) dominated the final two quarters, defeating Maryville (0-6) to conclude the Jamie Lynn Roberts Fairfield Inn DC Holiday Classic on Tuesday afternoon in the DuFour Center. Anna Scoblick was named the tournament's MVP while Amelia Kennedy and Alexa Kenah joined her on the all-tournament team.
Leading 32-19 at the break, the Cardinals outpaced the Scots 42-14 over the final two periods to run away with their fifth straight victory. Ella Haney opened the third quarter with a three for the Scots, pulling them within 10 points, but Scoblick sparked a 13-0 run with a three-point play with 9:14 on the third quarter clock. Scoblick contributed to the first eight points of the run, scoring five and handing out an assist on a Kennedy triple. Keegan Douglas scored the final five points of the run, putting Catholic ahead 45-22. Scoblick assisted the Douglas three to finish the run, giving her five points and two assists during the 2:05 stretch of play.
A personal 5-0 run from Kennedy grew Catholic's lead to 28 with 3:10 left in the quarter before the Cardinals took a 53-26 advantage into the final frame. After threes from Douglas and Olivia Boccella, Scoblick's final bucket of the contest came with 6:09 to play off a nice feed from Carly Mulvaney, putting Catholic ahead 61-27. Bocella would hit a second three at the 1:10 mark before Lia Villa scored the final bucket of the game with 20 seconds to play to put the finishing touches on a 41-point victory.
The Cardinals will go nearly two weeks without game action before heading to St. Petersburg to take on Messiah and Vassar in the Basketball Destinations Tournament.
