Women’s Basketball Second-Half Offense Sparks an 88-75 Comeback Win Over Brockport

DAYTONA, Fla. – After trailing by 11 points at halftime a big second half in which the Cardinals outscored the Golden Eagles 52-28 led the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team to an 88-75 comeback win over Brockport. Junior guard Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) led the Cardinals with 22 points knocking down 6 of 14 three-pointers at 42.8% as well as picking up four rebounds and handing out two assists.

Junior center Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) had a strong performance as well with 19 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y, / Ward Melville) led the Cardinal offense with a career-high eight assists to go with 15 points and four rebounds. Junior guard/forward Payton Couture (Redford, N.Y. / Saranac) finished the day with 14 points, nine rebounds, and five assists while Kathy Peterson Ross (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) had eight points, six rebounds, and three assists. First-year guard Kayla Johannesen (Hyde Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourdes) had a solid outing with five points and a career-high five assists as well as six rebounds while Selma Deisz (Greenville, N.Y. / Greenville) also added five points.

For the Golden Eagles, Stephanie Jean-Baptiste led all players with 32 points to go with her five rebounds and four steals. Kaileigh Hunt and Mandy Brink both contributed 10 points while Cam Tooley led the team in rebounds and assists with nine and eight respectively.

The Cardinals were hot from three knocking down 14 of 35 at 40.0% and shooting an efficient 49.3% from the field while the Golden Eagles only shot 28.0% from the three knocking down 7 of 25 and shot 33.3% from the field. The Golden Eagles had a 49-44 advantage in rebounding as well as 20 second chance points compared to the Cardinals 10. The Golden Eagles won the turnover battle and scored 21 points off turnovers while the Cardinals only had 11. Despite the turnovers, the Cardinals moved the ball well recording a season-high 26 total assists compared to 16 from the Golden Eagles.

Plattsburgh State rises to 5-3 overall with the win and will await the winner of the William Smith and Hardin-Simmons game, as they will play in the Mauro Panaggio Tournament championship game tomorrow, Dec. 17, at 1 p.m. Brockport falls to 6-2 with the loss and will await the loser of the William Smith and Hardin-Simmons game, as they will play in the Mauro Panaggio Tournament consolation game tomorrow, Dec. 17, at 11 a.m.

After a three from Jean-Baptiste started the game followed by a layup from Walcott, the Cardinals scored five straight and opened up a 7-6 lead. An 8-0 Brockport run gave the Golden Eagles a 16-9 lead at the 2:28 mark. A layup from Couture ended the run momentarily but another run for Brockport pushed the Golden Eagles' lead to 23-11. Both teams exchanged three-pointers to end the quarter as Wilson knocked down a three-pointer followed by one from Jean-Baptiste that made the score 26-14 Golden Eagles after one.  

The three-point shooting continued in the second quarter as Greek opened the quarter with a three followed by a three from Anna Lee that started a 10-0 run for the Golden Eagles and made the score 36-17 at the 8:10 mark. The Cardinals responded with a 6-0 burst led by Walcott and cut the Golden Eagles lead to 36-23. Another run for the Cardinals led by Wilson made the score 45-36 Golden Eagles as the Cardinals went into halftime down 47-36.

Another three-pointer from Greek got the quarter started followed by layups from Baptiste and Walcott that made the score 49-41 Golden Eagles. After four straight points put Brockport ahead by nine, the Cardinals went on an 11-0 tear, knocking down three straight three-pointers with two from Wilson and one from Couture that made the score 55-53 Cardinals at the 5:26 mark. Another run for Plattsburgh added to the Cardinals' lead and made the score 67-57 at the 2:34 mark. A three from Greek followed by a layup from Walcott gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the game at 14 until Brockport ended the quarter with a three that made the score 72-61 Cardinals after three-quarters of play.

Brockport opened the fourth with back-to-back layups followed by a jumper from Couture that made the score 74-65 Cardinals. After a jumper from Brink at the 7:35 mark neither team scored until the 4:53 mark when Couture made a layup that made the score 76-67 Cardinals. A three-pointer from Wilson started a 7-0 Plattsburgh run and extended the Cardinals' lead to 84-70 at the 3:15 mark as the Cardinals went on to win 88-75.
