Third quarter run powers Waynesburg to first PAC win

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (December 16) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team captured its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory, 53-44, on the road at Westminster on Monday afternoon at the Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Waynesburg improves to 5-5 overall and 1-5 in PAC play while the titans fall to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in conference action.

Westminster held a 25-20 advantage two minutes into the third quarter until Waynesburg responded with a decisive 17-1 run to take an 11-point lead (37-26) with 1:51 remaining in the third. Sophomore Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) led the jackets with five points and four rebounds during the stretch.

After a Titan timeout, Westminster closed the third and opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to five (37-32). The Jackets answered with a 9-4 push (46-36) led by junior Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio. / Monroe Central), who scored seven points in the spurt. The Jackets held on for the 53-44 road victory.

Westminster led 13-7 after the first quarter and grew its advantage to as many as eight points (19-11) in the second. The Jackets closed the first half on an 11-3 run and the teams went to halftime knotted at 20. The Titans scored the first five points of the second half before Waynesburg embarked on its go-ahead run.

Friday finished the game with 14 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Mohrbacher added 12 points, 12 rebounds, and three steals in a double-double effort. Sophomore Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W. Va. / Morgantown) put eight points towards the effort with two threes.

The Jacket defense stifled the Titans, winning the turnover battle 24-15. Waynesburg took advantage with 18 points off turnovers to Westminster's eight. The Jackets notched a season-low in points allowed and matched a season-high in turnovers against.

Waynesburg took the advantage in fastbreak points outscoring Westminster 16-7. The Jackets showed their depth as well outscoring the Titans 23-11 in bench points.

Waynesburg hosts Hiram after the break on December 30 for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
