GLASSBORO, NJ -- Rowan suffered its first New Jersey Athletic Conference defeat of the season, as the Profs fell at home to William Paterson, 65-55, Saturday afternoon.
Kate Herlihy netted 17 points for the Profs and Charlotte Carlies poured in 11 and a team-best six boards but Rowan had its five-game win streak come to an end.
Renee Wells scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, including back-to-back three pointers midway in the stanza to put the Pioneers ahead for good. Wells hit five of the team's 10 threes on day for WPU (10-of-18). Brianna Smith added 17 points, adding three three-pointers.
Rowan, who saw William Paterson commit 11 first-quarter turnovers, only led 13-9 after the first 10 minutes of play. Wells and Victoria Palladino connected on back-to-back triples to open the second to give the visitors its first lead (15-13). Despite a scoring drought from both teams over a three-minute plus span, the Pioneers held on to a 26-23 lead at the half.
Carlies scored five-straight points to put the Profs back on top, 31-30, early in the third. The Rowan lead swelled to 41-34 with 3:19 in the stanza after four-straight free throws, the latter two coming off a WPU technical foul. However, the Pioneers scored the final six points to cut it to a one-point Rowan edge heading into the final frame (41-40).
Jes Mastriano's driving lay in and foul with 6:39 to play gave the Profs its last lead of the contest (48-46) before Wells drained her two fourth-quarter trifectas on ensuing possessions as part of a 10-0 run to put the visitors on top the rest of the way.
The Profs will get back at it on Monday, December 30th in a non-conference game at Delaware Valley starting at 3 p.m.
