Stevens, Cole Pack Powerful One-Two Punch In Rout Of Rockford

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - Sophomore Margie Stevens (Oneida, Wis.) scored 20 points and freshman Abby Cole (Fond du Lac, Wis.) added 16 points off the bench to lead Wisconsin Lutheran College to a 74-55 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win over Rockford on Saturday at Time of Grace Center.

The Warriors (4-3, 2-0 NACC), who won their 27th straight game over the Regents in the all-time series, outscored Rockford 40-14 on points in the paint.

RU held an early 7-4 lead with 6:34 left in the first the quarter. WLC scored the next nine points, five of which came from senior Kara Troxel (Bonduel, Wis.) to give Wisconsin Lutheran a 13-7 advantage. The Warriors led by as many as seven points on a Stevens layup with a half-minute left, before carrying a 17-13 into the second quarter.

WLC started the second quarter with a 12-2 scoring run over the opening three minutes to open up a 29-15 lead. Rockford responded with a 10-2 run of its own, as Wisconsin Lutheran led 31-25 with just under two minutes left in the first half. A three from senior Janiyah Goner (Milwaukee, Wis.) and a layup just before the buzzer from junior Jayden Hill (Kenosha, Wis.) extended the Warriors' advantage back to double digits at 36-25 at the half.

The Regents closed within eight points over the opening three minutes of the third quarter. A 10-2 WLC scoring run highlighted by six points from Cole gave the hosts a 49-32 lead with three minutes remaining. Wisconsin Lutheran extended its lead to 20 points for the first time on a layup from Stevens with a minute-and-a-half left. The Warriors maintained the 20-point margin, 60-40, after three quarters.

RU netted the first bucket of the fourth quarter to trail by 18 points, but would get no closer. A 9-3 spurt from WLC behind four points from Stevens pushed the advantage to 71-47, its largest lead of the game, with five minutes left. Wisconsin Lutheran kept its advantage above 20 points before a late basket by Rockford.

Stevens finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, all game-highs. Cole added 16 points and six rebounds off the bench. Troxel chipped in with nine points, while Goner added seven points while also snagging seven rebounds. The Warriors shot 41 percent from the field on 25-for-61 shooting. WLC outrebounded the Regents 52-32, and outscored them 30-19 off the bench.

D'Asia Washington scored a team-high 11 points for RU, which shot 26.6 percent (17-for-64) from the floor.
